You Can't Trust Anyone

My mom might get arrested. She lied to get me free health insurance, and she got a letter in the mail today about insufficient information. This woman lied since I was born, to get Child Health Plus, which expired when I turned 19.
Apparently, she also lied on FAFSA... which means if they investigate, I might get arrested for her stupidity, because I signed it, too.
What a wonderful thing to wake up to..
"I got a letter from Child Health Plus, I lied to get you insurance. Should I go to a lawyer ? I don't want to get arrested. Oh god, I lied to FAFSA, too!"

And I dont think you can get arrested for something you didnt know was actually a lie.
However, I am an expert on financial aid- it's my full time job. And I will tell you that roughly 80% of the people who fill out the FAFSA are either directly or indirectly lying when they fill it out. There's a random selection the DOE does to make you correct it and supply documents if you did something wrong... BUT, they leave the enforcement pretty much up to the schools, who hold the licenses. As for legal action? Pfffsshhhh. No. Not even a little. Not a single one of these people gets investigated by anyone with more authority than to give you a monetary slap on the wrist, and that's only if you weren't entitled to the money.
So in reality, your mom's looking at maybe some monetary ball and chain for a while, and you're probably maybe a little less eligible than you were. It all boils down to money, nobody's going to jail, here.
Ain't nobody gettin' taken away by da po-po. Guilt trip the shit out of your mom if the DOE calls you about any Pell overpayments.
