Also "Jesus didn't have a religion" um, you don't need to be an expert theologian to know that he very much did. As Stephen Colbert said, "You're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts." There's a unique brand of willful ignorance going on here. It's almost fascinating lol.

I get the impression he just doesn't like the word religion. He certainly has religious beliefs, he just doesn't want them to be called such. It's like the very semantics offend him.

He was OK with it last time it came up. He is one of those people. The kind that doesn't want to admit their short comings so blames the word and becomes defensive thus making a vicious cycle.

O believe me, I've met too many of those people. Some people want to see the world a certain way and can't handle the cognitive dissonance when other people don't believe as they do, or inconvenient "facts" show them to be wrong. So they resolve it by assuming that anyone that doesn't believe as they do are intellectually, morally, or psychologically defective, or some combination thereof. That doesn't just apply to religion either; it easily applies to politics, general beliefs, and even matters of provable fact. There's just no reasoning with such people, and I've learned it's a waste of time to even try, unless you just like setting them off for your own entertainment (I'll admit I've done such some times).

Ya, that is him all over. I keep trying anyway, partly because it keeps him form bothering anyone else (I can take just about anything and kind of get off on it at this point. ^^;) and because I hope to someday somehow cure foolishness.

I have quite a few like this actually.

Some atheists very much do; many want to "convert" others to their non-belief for some reason. Others are content to just not believe what they don't believe and don't seek to convince others to do the same. The latter I have no problem with.

Don't see the point in trying to convert people out of all religion, living in the Bible belt I can tell ya, some people are so stupid that they are probably better off fallowing a religion.

Well will at least agree with you that it's pointless to try to force your beliefs down someone else's throat. I'll gladly share my beliefs with anyone sincerely interested, but if someone crosses their arms and says "I don't believe that, and am never going to" I just agree to disagree and move on, if it's just a matter of opinion. If it's a matter of fact rather than opinion, I just show proof of the fact. I've had people still refuse to accept the fact even then lol and the person who's the source of all this conversation strikes me as such a person; in that case I just give up.

Had more than my fair share of "god" this and "Jesus" that...it's rather a huge turn off when something bad happens and all of a sudden it's "the will of God"

When I was little, mother was at church and I wondered off, she couldn't find me and when she asked for help everyone just told her "it must be the will of God you lose your child"

So you can see why I'd rather distance myself from that sort of people.

On the flip side I will say that I have seen hints of there being a higher power of some sort, and have had my share of run ins with demonic spirits.

Well I arrive at all my beliefs, religious or otherwise, independent of what other people have to say about them. The problem you had was with those people, not the god they follow.

Short answer I have to those people is that God is not the only force at work in the universe. Everything that happens is "God's will" in the sense he's always in charge, but that doesn't mean that everything that happens is something he wants to happen.

Please keep in mind I'm not trying to debate specific beliefs here. I'm just saying hating religion because you have issues with some religious people is kind of like hating music because you don't like the fans of a specific band.

I've had this debate about a hundred times now though, but even though I tend to show a disdain towards certain people because of religion, I also don't hate them all, just the fanatic ones. I live in the Bible belt, so I have to get along with them or I'd get no where at all here. I mean, there is a church every two blocks here, not even joking.

Fair enough. For the most part I'm tolerant of whatever anyone else does or doesn't believe. So long as they don't insist there's something wrong with me because I believe differently than they do, and so long as they don't act as if their beliefs gives them the right to control what I may or may not do. Other than that, believe whatever you want and feel free to say so. (And this applies to any beliefs, not just religious ones.)

Satanism hu? That does mean there is a good chance there was more to what he thought then you would think.

It's a little complex but basically some atheists made a sort of mock religion centered around the devil, partly as protest, partly so they could better organize their thoughts into one book.

*sigh* I live on the belief that as long as you're not hurting anyone in any way, shape, or form, I'm pretty much fine with whatever you do. I really don't understand why some athiests think it's necessary to be anti-religious, too. (Plenty of atheists aren't like this, after all.)
