Basically, in the case of Capitol Records v. Thomas-Rasset, the jury found that the plaintiff was guilty of distributing 24 songs on a peer-to-peer network, and fined her $80,000 per song.
Since I have 34 songs on this site, they're worth $80,000 * 34 = $2,720,000!
(Good luck collecting on that money. Especially since I freely license these copies for non-commercial use!)
I think the RIAA has gone bonkers at this point. I can understand their desire to curb piracy, but shaking down a Minnesotan housewife for $1.9 million? That's worse than their attempt to wring $2000 from a 12-year-old girl living in a low-income housing project!
