Well I would say for me it would be how much detail and the length of the story you would want. Also would be a question of how much the illustrations would cost vs how much the story would cost for an equal amount :)

How do you price stories? I'm thinking of a short stories/novelette type tf story and inked black and white illustration!

Honestly I have no true setup for prices but my average story length has been for about $20. I'm currently at work so I can't look up my stories to estimate my story lengths / words etc. But I would definitely be interested in doing a collab :) would be fun!

I usually go penny, penny-and-a-half per word on my stories.

It depends on the detail/colouring/complexity of the image, but if we're going to use "real" examples...well, I normally price my commissions at a cent per word--a low price, but I'm not really trying to make money/profit largely off of writing from this site. Now, let's say you do the 2-3 images at your most basic; that is, one character in B&W pencil which is $30 per image according to your user page. So if we were going for price equivalency here, 2-3 images at $30 per image would amount to a story between 6000-9000 words. That isn't that bad, it's a decent length for a short story, enough to have some plot and distinct characters and perchance a theme or two. Of course, in this example the amount of words would again depend on the detail/colouring/complexity of the associated images along with the actual cost per word.

I work with a small group of writers and we charge about 15 euro per 1000 words so easy thing to do is match that against your own prices and work out the ratio of words per image :)
