Ah well, for a really long time I had a hard time finding the difference between "sona" and "character", as all of my characters were some sort of representation of me (what I wanted to be, what I was drawn to but would never be or do, etc.). Only when i was able to really sit down and go "OK what am I most like, not because I LIKE dogs or cats or hippos or whatever, but what am I REALLY most like in terms of behavior, mannerisms, grooming habits, socialization stuff..." Only then was I able to determine my species/breed at its clearest. Even still, I change, as all people do, so I expect my sona will change over time! :D

Oh man I could really get into this topic in hand! Alright well at first when I discovered the furry fandom I created a dragoness character since I have been very found of dragons for years and years. Even tho when I created Tear version 0.1, that was a time of my life where I had my struggles per say and overall when years came by, I felt that she isn't really the me that I am now. About this time I have been searching for what character is me now. I have been asking several of my friends and other people on what species do they see me as, I had several answers, for example, wolf, horse, dragon, someone did say a bit of a sergal but not fully a sergal, feline, Even tho it wasn't a specific one. Keeping the question in mind on what species I tried to think of their personality traits or how they are socially. However I sort of decided to create my own little species based on equine and dragon since equines stick to their herd and are really close to the one's they chose and they can be pretty expressive, I do have a bad habit of not keeping myself still and pacing ha. The reason why I have kept with a dragon is well I do enjoy my solitude and when I have a treasure that is very important then I shall keep it safe until I am no longer here. Also the reason why I have decided on an ice elemental creature is the fact that I could be solid as ice but one little crack and everything could crumble (AKA sensitive and emotional but strong headed and could be a pillar to others). Therefore I have created Tear 2.0 an ice h'ragra (I have created information and a background story to the h'ragra species which was pretty fun to do!). Tear 1.0 was the version of my old self from where I would keep everything to myself and would not really speak to no one, she was someone that was more in solitude. Tear 2.0 is more expressive and can be dramatic at times from where she can show quite a bit of her emotions and enjoys being surrounding by people she cares about. Depending on what emotions are overwhelming her she prefers to stay alone, where the dragon solitude comes in.

Yuppers! Exactly, and sorry for theong story, I actually could of continued on but I didn't want to drag on. XD

XD My sona is me with all the fixes I'm planning to achieve AND bad attitudes enhanced because well, everything must be balanced.
But personality aside, her bodyshape, hair colors and animal traits are mine, because I need to feel comfortable while "moving" her through story since she's my extension. She just have a bit more muscles but, I'll have those abs sooner or later.
She's a lioness because liones have always been my favourite animals, and also because -despite my love for dogs (Leo is a dog indeed) - I've always been a cat myself. Literally, when I was young I chased balls of wool and slept on the headboard of teh sofa. I was also used to scratch people and jump from chair to chair.
The horns are the one of a steinbock, because I love mountains and there's a bit of an alpine goat in me XD Facepaintig is something i took from an older character I have, and I'm still very attached to her.
What's left? golden gadjets and fire! I love golden stuff and red things and rend gems. And fire is because I have a really HUGE rage grawing under my smile day by day, so Scarlet has this ability to set herself on fire when she is enraged and, unlike me, she cannot hide her rage (balance!)

I've had my fursona for years, but it wasn't until getting over a two year art block did I really feel the need to develop her. It took me a couple years to pick up a pencil again and at that point I decided to switch to digital(though one of these days I'll go back and practice traditional again). I was mostly drawing my fursona to get use to digital. During the first year she became a lot more masculine as I decided to ditch trying to differentiate male and female characters. I was never good at it in the first place. I got interesting preferences. She's always been fat, but as I drew her she developed a fat man baby body(as a friend described lol) and ended up with big muscular Popeye arms XD

My reason for choosing her species is sort of boring. I just REALLY like koalas and always have as a kid. As I got older I began to like the color orange too, so I slapped a bit of that in her. I kept the natural koala colors and splashed in a little orange. I also didn't give her koala teeth, obviously. I drew the big dumb fangs once and decided to keep them, because to hell with being anatomically correct XD

well you don't need any talent in drawing i means if you know how to describe clearly in short lines i guess you could commission people to draw your perfect sona :)

I literally pulled mine from dungeons and dragons. Chose kobold cause cute and smol and chose silver dragonwrought because D&D silver dragon personality matches up with mine pretty well.

I thought of how cute cats are and imagined a cat with hair, then with blue boxers, and that's how t came to be.

Well mine wasn't so complex really :P started as a cat, since I love cats and blue is my fav color, then after some years I started thinking more into a fursona and a tiger it became, since it's the biggest cat and is all majestic :3 plus I love the oriental, hindu style and fashion so even more reason to be a tiger!

Then there's many times you see designs around FA here and you just go "aw man, wish I could have come up with that" *lol* pretty much why last year I made my secondary 'sona of my own spieces, the Solise, just 'cause I love it so much .3.

Don't draw much of any of my fursonas, to many characters and so little time, doesn't help I'm such a slow artist at times XP like I still have sketches that's 2 years old I want to finish but just doesn't get around to do it...

I chose an equine for my character for two main reasons. While I am pretty fond of horses I also wanted a species that wasn't so common (they weren't at the time anyway)

 brushfire helped me with the design and brought him to life with the first artwork of him. I wanted a fairly unique character that is easily recognized and I think he fits that quite well.

I chose German Shepherds as a Sona because of firstly, I've raised them my entire life, but secondly, and more important are what qualities that are embodied by the breed. German Shepherds are known for their ferocious loyalty, bravery, intelligence, athleticism, and for their gentleness to those whom they may love, qualities that I admire and hope to embody as a person myself.

As for the physique, Mag is the physique I get to be when I'm peek fitness, particularly during my marathon/triathlon season (usually the Spring and Summer of each year, unless I'm deployed). The single abdominal scar is more representative than an actual scar I have, representing my personal battle against obesity and losing 140 pounds to get where I am today, and is the physical manifestation of issues I still experience in my mind (ranging from insecurities, to other things) because of just how big I once was. There probably should be one or two scars that I need to add, since I do have them (surgical scars from when I broke my leg sky diving), but I'll probably not bother with that because I forgot to mention it to the artist I commissioned for it XD

And as for the pattern, Mag's pattern is actually a reflection of the pattern of my best bud of 7 years now, who has helped me through many things, including a very long and deep bout of depression 6 years ago, where I was hostile to all that was human, and severed many relationships entirely because of how angry I was at the world. I was really inspired by fashion this year and was like, "I'm just gonna put all the shit i like on this, and then clean it to make it look a bit prettier."

the first appearance happened around 1995. it happened as an idea, maybe triggered by a documentary about south africa's black-maned lions. he was meant as a RPG-character, but didn't last long. the Gamemaster back when had a hard time balancing enemies and monsters against the player character's abilities... I ignored the result and made a few pics with him later.
then there was eurofurence 4, in 1998, and everyone had a furry or scaly or feathery critter to represent themselves. so I picked that lion character, because I could hide a lot of anatomy behind a long, black mane... later the same year he became my fursona. since then the only change was the swicthn from retractable claws to nails a few years ago.

Long story, but to make it short, I choose cheetah on many different aspects : behaviour, preferences, physical characteristics, not too lonely feline but not the most sociable too etc... :p
A long process, not a king cheetah because I prefer smaller spots but with large bands to get closer to the tiger.
And finally purple hairs for 2 reasons : favourite colour and opposite to the natural yellow of the animal.
Still hesitating for the colour of the hairs but I carry it since years and in some ways it doesn't look so bad, so, I still keep it and be recognised by it too.
But are you really interested by that answer ? :p

I like dragons and werewolves so I just mashed them together. For colors I decided to go natural grey wolf colors. Yes there are characters that look great with unnatural colors for their species and I myself like that kind of colors, but it just didn't fit my character.
Scales on the front of my character were inspired by Drachis Argonians skin for Skyrim.
The tail is thicker at the base an thinner at the end like a lizard tail but it's actually fluffy (the ref sheet is out of date... Really need to update it :|)

considering the fact a crap ton of people tend to call me a bear, i could do something with that, but i'm not much like one, so i'm kinda in the void of my own thoughts what to pick.

as it is, i'm not sure, though i am taking a liking to red pandas lately.

and i'm assuming a lot of people are basing their fursona's off of what animals they like, less about what they look like, they just give them personailty traits close to their heart.

do a red panda with stag horns ? i means no need to go on hyper colored sona maybe the simplest is the best ?

i get what your saying, and i wouldn't go nuts with colors for a red panda, the red is already vibrant enough xD
as for fur pattern i'd keep that simple as well, with only two differences to natural fur patterns, which are not even that noticeable.

Well, mine is simply an evolution of my high-school nickname, that I developed into a character while being a member of an RPG/LARP group. That was long before I joined the fandom, but when I was already influenced by Warhammer, M:tG and L5R, so I already saw the badass-ness-potential of rats. His colours (silver-grey and green) are simply colours I like, although the silver was also meant to represent a "balance" or a mean medium between white and black and it used to be reflected in his original name as well. As for his occupation, I always steered more towards smart characters and magic-users and by then I was also already interested in history of religions, mythology and magic, so there.

My sona's are direct representations of myself. The ones I have are all, basically character traits. Gnoll is my day to day. While others are the white knight, the super villain, the etc. Generally they were derived from soul searching and/or dreams.

I had my sona in my head as long as i can remember, some times i had dreams flying as a dragon atlhough they are pretty rare atm but he evolved in my head i contacted a artist named Jewel-Thief and asked if she could help me design the dragon i had pictured in my head. And after much emailing and sketching she helped create my sona and i was so happy when i saw him in art for the first time! And yeah to me hes just how i would look if i could go dragonform IRL :) the scar he has is from a old RP i had a while ago and meh i thought why not keep it. So yeah even if hes just a Black And white drake i still like my sona and hes helped me get my life and health in order also eating right and doing some exercise to get in shape again. So yeah My sona's name is my gaming nickname aswell also hes a part of me and i feel connected to him and actually waiting for a fursuit to be finished also which i eagerly wait for with excitement like a 6 year old on xmas eve^^

My main sona is based off of the two most popular animals in my state in the USA. Deer and Horses! I wanted to created a character that had a deep connection to where I was from. not just my birthplace but my country (all Americans are mutts XD). my profile name came from my feelings of being flawed and imperfect growing up due to abuse and tragedy. My profile name "Levn" is from the Hebrew term in Genesis and Leviticus which is a representation of sin and is also referred to as sin (what i felt the world saw me as upon creating my name). Leavn turned into Levn ^^

I wanted something small and cute and Furcadia had mice, so I ended up with a small grey mouse. :)

Amshiga is like my other half I guess you can say. My friends growing up that I would wrestle would say that I was a whole other person when we would wrestle. That I was always shy yet feisty, sassy, fierce, protective, honest,and loyal. Half my friends would call me an angel or a tiger so my nine year old self made a rp character that was a combination of an angel and tiger. And my chinese sign is tiger >^-^< Always wanted my hair either a red or black color that was long after my mother cut off my to the hips long hair when I was 8 due to my hair being so thick and hard to treat for lice. Her icy blue eyes were the color of my eyes when I was alot younger. Now my eyes are a deep blue color that can turn grey if i wear black and even bluer when i wear anything blue. She is to have markings on her besides the tiger strips but I have yet to find ones that suits me or where the markings would be on her.

Well, my main use is dragon, and for her I put together stuff I really like for ex turtlenecks, short hair, my favorite colors (tho red should have been more vine-red xI), and I even gave her glasses since I use glasses and I think it's quite nice when it comes to accessories since they come in some different shapes and small details on the side. I also wanted her to be more cute/elegant as she got paired up with my fiancés dragon who is much taller and looks a little more tougher, so she got a bit slim bodyshape. What I also gave her was magic powers, because that was actually something I wished I had as a kid, so why not give her that x)
Tho she is very special to me, and she also inspired me to draw more art, since I always loved dragons since I was a child and I felt it has been more fun to draw stuff as I have even improved since she got created c: This is also putting me back on track learning some new people in the art world as I also got to find another interest with my fiancé
