I'm probably a little late with this, because I really am behind the times. But has anyone come across this awesome little fan project called Sonic Utopia? It's a fully 3D sonic fan game that's being developed with the Unity game engine. Believe me, if this was a project made by Nintendo fans, they would've been issued a cease and desist notification already. But nope, great things like this are happening (Sega's so cool like that). The link below will send you to the Sega Nerds website, complete with a video trailer and a direct link that takes you to the Rar file so you can install and try the game out for yourself... for free. I know the game is still in development and lacks camera control, but it really showcases how a 3D Sonic game could be made. The game gave me a happy face... and a boner :)

Also check your system specifications to ensure the game runs smoothly. My old HP Elitebook has an i7 2620M CPU and a hd 6470M graphics card and can't run the game at an acceptable frame rate *rolls eyes* However, my desktop runs it like butter.
