Music - Deliciously Stoney and Evil Doom and Sludge
16 years ago
So I know there are a good handful of furry metalheads as well as furry stoners, but I've yet to encounter many furries that listen to doom or sludge metal. It seems like a lot of people are turned off by the length and slowness of a lot of the songs, but I personally love both of those aspects of these genres, since you can just get so deep into a groove and allow the song to evolve over, say, fifteen minutes, as opposed to most 3-6 minute songs. So I will present to you a list of my favorites, and I suggest you guys check it out. I'll try to find some youtube links for samples, and if something sparks your interest I can send the album to you over AIM or upload it or something.
Acid Bath: Okay, these guys are pretty weird, since they're really all over the place in style, they can be kind of death metaly sometimes, or they'll switch to cleaner vocals occasionally. Good stuff though. I'm most fond of their album When The Kite String Pops. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjBwxXmNY0Q
ASVA: Doom metal by Trey Spruance (of Mr. Bungle fame) and the guys from Burning Witch? Can't go wrong there. Mostly instrumental and quite droney, this stuff is good to listen to in the middle of the night in the dark and blazed as fuck.
Blood of the Black Owl: Very atmospheric and grainy black/funeral doom. I think they have two albums out now, but I only have their first self titled one. I really really like Chet Scott's work on this project of his, another good one to listen to in the middle of the night, especially when it's raining out. Has a very... in-the-middle-of-the-woods feeling.
Bongzilla: How could I leave out Bongzilla. Good 'ol straightforward stoner metal, probably one of the more well know bands on this list. This video is fucking hilarious. Bongzilla fits very well with The Evil Dead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY7GeZWKknU
Boris: I actually only have one Boris album (Amplifier Worship), which I need to fix. This Japanese band is pretty eclectic with their styles. I haven't listened to enough of them to really say much else, but they're quite good.
Burning Witch: Definitely one of my favorite sludgey doom bands. Edgy 59 has some of the most raw and intense vocals around and with Stephen O'Malley on guitars this music just sucks you in. Very very heavy and somewhat painful to listen to (which is a good thing for me haha). I've listened to this song so many times, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV-3QTJk658
Disembowelment: Death metal mixed with Doom. I actually find this band to be rather difficult to listen to, since they get really fucking slow sometimes. TRUE STORY: Their album Transcendence Into The Peripheral mixed with the music/gameplay of DefJam for the PS3 makes for an extremely hilarious acid trip. I seriously couldn't stop laughing for about an hour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfgZBsljNis
Dot[.]: Japanese sludge which sadly happens to be rather obscure and difficult to find. I love this band, the mixture of ultra deep growls and harsh screeches is excellent and the riffs are so chunky. I wish I could find a YouTube link for them, because they fucking kick ass.
Down: Dood. All I should have to say about this band is: Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown (both of Pantera), and Jimmy Bower (of Eyehategod). Holy shit. Bury Me In Fucking Smoke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRA3VgO3Vz0
Electric Wizard: One of the grandfathers of sludgey doom. These guys are phenomenal. If you're going to listen to sludge/doom metal, there's no way you can not listen to Electric Wizard. I'd say they, along with Sleep pretty much exemplify the smoother, grooving style of sludge (Black Sabbath anyone?), with vocals usually on the cleaner side. Their "opposite" would be a band like Eyehategod. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-n6gpM5pFk
Eyehategod: Another grandfather of sludge, these guys are much more harsh with tons of earsplitting feedback and a more frantic, punkish sound mixed with bluesy riffs. When I first heard them way back when I was just getting into metal I hated them, but now that I'm out of my rather narrow minded death metal only phase, they've grown on me so much. Probably one of my favorite sludge metal bands now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClMRYyVnD1s
Goatsnake: I've always liked them, but I recently just completely fell in love with their album Flower of Disease. One of Greg Anderson's (him and Stephen O'Malley from Sunn O))) are in like, every sludge band ever) bands. Very clean vocals, pretty easy to listen to compared to say, Burning Witch or Eyehategod. Arg, I love this band, they have such a strong groove and the vocals are pure awesome. Very bluesy and so fun to sing to while driving around, especially on hot days. For once a YouTube comment is actually legit: "makes you want to get trashed and drive your motorcycle through death valley with a shotgun strapped to your back" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqOoGBvJBK4
Khanate: Yet another O'Malley band and the complete opposite of Goatsnake. Ear piercing, headache inducing, painful, droney, depressing, makes you want to rip you face off. I love it. You will probably hate it. Every instrument including the vocals are doing their best to cause you pain and they all do it splendidly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNGwLTPEhyA
Kyuss: How could I leave out Kyuss? They pretty much made stoner metal/rock. With song names like "Jumbo Blimp Jumbo" and "Tangy Zizzle" they fucking rock out. So pleasing to listen to, makes me want to go and wander the desert and sing their songs. Fuck, I love all of their songs so much, I can't choose just one to put on here. Just go and listen to any of their albums.
Om: Such a simple mix of bass, drums, and vocals, but damn, this music is hypnotizing and beautiful, very much like Tibetan chanting. Much more mellow than most of the bands I've listed so far, very nice to listen to while working on art. Their albums only ever consist of a few songs, nearly all of the over ten minutes. If you ever have a chance to see them live, DO IT. Just... amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqTPJzTOYpE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfUgtv9Fl2E
Sleep: Delicious stoner metal. Sleep's Holy Mountain is an excellent record, rather bluesy with clean vocals. And if you have the endurance, you MUST listen to their song/album Dopesmoker. A brutal one hour and three minutes of pretty much just one riff, but the way it evolves and changes is great. Another good song for sitting and working on art. Plus the lyrics are about an race of people called the Weedians and their travels across the world. Win. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9ouIsiqdvA
Sludghammer: hahah I just had to put this here. My friend's band, with my boy Greg on drums. I've listened to them play so many times, it's insane. All of their stuff is pretty roughly recorded (either in their living room in Santa Cruz or in a garage in Portland) but it's still pretty damn good. http://www.myspace.com/neckdeepinquicksand
Sunn O))): Ah Sunn O))), the masters of droney doom. Very atmospheric, grinding, minimalistic, and long, I find them to be quite intense and I usually have to be in the right mood for them. Their song My Wall is my favorite. Best listened to in the dark with no distractions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIR1KfKXH6s
Thergothon: Old school funeral doom from Finland. Grim, bleak, very slow, and churning. Another band I have to be in the right mood for. Not my favorite doom, but still notable.
Thorr's Hammer: Wow, you'd never guess a 17 year old girl was doing vocals for this doom band (ANOTHER O'Malley band lol). Very heavy and well... doomy. A short lived band, but damn good. After they broke up (a.k.a. Runhild the vocalist went back to Norway since she was an exchange student) Burning Witch was formed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWGiNLbmhs
Weedeater: Stoney, similar to Bongzilla (since their bassist/vocalist happens to be in Bongzilla). I love their riffs, you can really rock out to this band. If you see them live, expect Dixie Dave to puke on himself at some point. Mankind is unkind man!/GOD LUCK AND GOOD SPEEEEED http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQkTQIN_5Fk
Witch: Their riffs are so fucking awesome. Mostly supernatural themed (they have a song about Rip Van Winkle haha) but sludgey nonetheless. In my opinion, their first album, Witch, is the best. Also, the album cover is genius. Very unique clean vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5von-_FI0U
YOB: Last, but definitely not least, is YOB. I fucking love this band and listening to them earlier made me want to make this whole long ass list. All of their albums have been spot on and I really can't choose a favorite. I'm so happy that they got back together, and are releasing a new album in about a month. I MUST SEE THEM LIVE. This band is amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7Fj1dakJlc
If you have any suggestions for me, fire away! Damn, this list took forever for me to write up.

Kyuss rocks! And yeah, metal is all about ANGERRRRR. I'm rather used to it now and I never really take it too seriously, but I think I'm also naturally... fiery. Not quite violent and too stoney to be angry, but fiery works. XD

OP
I dunno what it is with metal that just clicks with me, but when I first started getting in to it I knew it would be with me for the rest of my life. I'm so fascinated by musical preferences and how people are attracted to one thing but not the other. And the weird way that people get so defensive over their choices. I wonder how and why all of the stuff works. I'd speculate that I actually am a violent person and metal allows me to express that without actually being violent. Or it could be that my ingrained dissatisfaction with much of the way humanity conducts itself drives me to seek a style of music that expresses similar thoughts. I dunno though, since I also really like jazz and classical and rap and reggae and electronic and folk music from around the world. The human mind does some crazy shit.
