Furlandia 2017/First Con?
So next year has a lot of stuffs planned on my end and one of those I was thinking of doing is con stuffs.
I’ve never been to a con before and the only advice I’ve gotten was “don’t go to a big con as your first” and “don’t booth at your first con.” As an ice breaker into the whole con thing I figured Furlandia in Portland, OR would be good to do; wouldn’t hafta worry about hotels or travel outside of an hour drive so expenses are basically admission and it's p'small compared to the bigger cons.
Now my dilemma is I dunno diddly about con experience or what I’d do outside of just attending, and going solo leaves me unnerved even if it’s something I’m pretty sure I’d be down with.
To peeps: Are cons worth tryin’ out in general? What’s the experience/what should I expect or prep for? And anyone goin’ to Furlandia 2017 in particular?
also how does selling porn work at these things

On the going with friends thing, unfortunately most of whom I know is much too far away to attend nearby cons and vice verse; I might be able to attend one of the farther cons if I save up towards them though that'd be plans for the future and if this experience goes well.
Speaking as someone who has attended the San Diego Comic Con since 2008, let me just state some simple and hopefully well known facts and suggestions.
Generally, it's always more fun to go with friends but solo can be awesome! You get to meet new people, you get to make friends at the con, and of course you get to wear whatever you want.
Con basics:
- Water, good shoes, and a backpack. Depending on whether or not you go all-out and wear a fursuit or even a partial, you'll want to bring a backpack to carry your food, water, and items. It'll be best to bring a regular ol' backpack with several pockets or zipper slots, a bottled water or refillable water, and snack food to get you through the day.
Also, if you plan on buying art prints or getting commissions, then bring a solid binder or sketch journal that they can draw your thing into. That way the commissioned art stays safe as you transport it.
- Bring money or bring a card that you can redeem money from. Most cons won't have ATM machines.
- Be sure to eat a hearty breakfast because you'll need that energy to walk around.
- Be friendly, try to socialize. You're surrounded by furries.
- People in fursuits should never be hugged without their acknowledgement. Fursuits are soooo expensive, and usually they have a friend accompanying them to make sure they don't bash into walls or obstacles. Just make sure its fine before you hug or something.
- Very important rule, be sure to bring a camera or phone and CHARGE IT. Personally I prefer bringing an external battery pack, a 2000mAh usb power pack is perfect and only like $10-$20 depending on which you want. The higher the mAh the more full recharges you get with it, also bring the corresponding usb cable, obviously.
So yeah, and also, bring comfortable clothing and good walking shoes like sneakers. Cosplay is also allowed.
Last thing, have fun~ <3
If I wasn't two hours away from Portland, due to being from Roseburg, I'd totally love to come with you actually. I've been to the San Diego Comic-Con, which is like a few thousand people daily for four days. Huge amount of people, but awesome.
Seriously though, if we could both attend, I'd totally love to hang out with you there. <:3 <3
Also, i have heard that Portland, Oregon generally isn't the absolute safest of places, so just be aware of your surroundings when going there and make sure you're parked away from the street. Just look like you know what you're doing and where you're going, be alert and safe.
Also, may 26-28th, yeah I should be able to attend it. Awesome~
At least for a start I know that I'll only attend for fun; I know booth stuffs can be fairly complicated/expensive and I'd wanna prep lots beforehand, or booth with someone else if possible. And fortunately I've been to Portland before so that shouldn't be much trouble.
And ah, if you're attending I'd be mighty happy to hang with; would certainly appreciate tagging along with someone who knows plenty about con stuffs ^. .^
As far as prepping for conventions, just be yourself. You'll be a nervous wreck, but honestly, enjoy yourself, be yourself. I wouldn't recommend getting involved in staff your first time either, nor the second time. However, if you have any questions about Furlandia 2017, go ahead and ask our social media on Facebook, Twitter, and others. I do recommend pre-registering if you haven't done so already. Saves you money.
Thanks for the tips too there, and will be followin' updates on 'em!
