ME2 DLC is pretty good, or at least the ones that add major questlines. Lair of the Shadow Broker & Arrival are almost necessary, in my honest opinion, from a plot perspective. Overlord is a lot of fun, but it's not as vital to the story (IMHO) as the other two are.

Zaeed & Kasumi are both fun squadmates (though they aren't as developed as the others). They each come with their own set of missions and they definitely have a part to play in ME3. Most of the DLC packs add some small thing or another to your experience in ME3.

Some of the DLC isn't as vital - different armors, appearances, really minor quests, etc. But there's a lot of major questlines and stuff, and new squadmates like I mentioned.

I would try the trilogy IF it was available on Steam but only the first 2 are there. Not worth it to have to sign up for an entire service just to download a few games.

I doubt ME3 may get to Steam, since it's been a long time, and the Steam versions of the first two do not allow DLC to be installed. Andromeda won't make it to Steam, either.

Still not worth it to have to create an entire account on Origin just for a few games. Was forced to do that with uPlay for Watch Dogs (played the game for 90 minutes and then forgot I even had it for more then 2 years).

There's basically three sorts of DLCs for ME2 - characters, storylines, and gear.

You've got two character DLCs, each introducing one extra companion, Kasumi and Zaeed, along with a mission for each later on. Zaeed's DLC is included with the package available on Origin for free at the moment.
Storylines are generally multi-mission things telling a larger side plot. Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, Arrival... and to a lesser extent, Firewalker. That last one's also free with the Origin pack.
And then there's the gear, this is typically just stuff offering a specific helmet, or weapon, or an armour suit. You've got a couple of them in the Origin pack, the rest require purchase (with Bioware points instead of directly, just to make it all even more confusing.)

The selection in the free package ain't great, but as you said, free is free, especially if you don't have the game yet.

Well, 2 is by far the best one, though ME1 sets it all into perspective.

I love them all. 3 is my favorite if you add in the extended cut and the DLC stuff, otherwise 2 is the best.
