KH fanfic conundrum [PLEASE READ + RESPOND]
8 years ago
So for a while now it has been announced that I plan to do another Kingdom Hearts fan-fiction, which already has its established new key bearer protagonist: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9093669/
The next step in the process, then, is to find a Donald and Goofy for our new hero. He needs some sidekick party members to buddy up with him as he travels around different worlds to set things right.
For a long time, I thought I already had this area covered with one strong party member to accompany him, a character with physical contrast yet an immeasurable amount of valuable intellectual assets. I was keeping this character's identity a secret so it would be a bit of a surprise within the story, although it's a generally unknown character so I doubt it would merit much of a response from people. However, I have found a couple of other characters that may or may not work as potentially better party members to replace this first one, and I need some input to help me decide.
Won't you please read through my explanations below and help me out? I'm REALLY torn about this and could really use your help!
So, to start, I shall reveal my initial choice for Ash's party member.
"Blazing Dragons" is the name of a popular British cartoon from the late 1990s that was the brainchild of Monty Python's Terry Jones. Its premise centers around a group of dragons who, rather than being the scourge of a medieval kingdom, are actually its residents. Dragons make up the good kingdom of Camelhot (heh), while on the other hand humans are despicable and evil. It often parodies King Arthur tales and other tropes found within stories set in the Middle Ages, even down to the knight's names (Sir Lancelot is now Sir Loungealot, for example). It only consisted of 2 seasons, both having an opposing animation style to the other. The first season had more appealing colors and slightly more detailed character design, while the second season used a simpler, bolder style that varied greatly. I personally prefer the first season, and therefore would use those character appearances as reference.
Among the cast of literally and figuratively colorful characters is the squire of the famous Sir Loungealot. He is actually the main protagonist of this story, and his name is Flicker. Good-quality pictures of him are in short supply, but you can see him on the right side of this picture: http://images.wikia.com/blazingdrag.....amecartoon.jpg
Apart from many of the other dragons in the series, Flicker is surprisingly intelligent. He's an avid inventor, discovering methods far ahead of his time that simplify combat and daily tasks. Although his specialty is mind over matter, Flicker also proves himself fairly savvy in combat in a few episodes, one example being an extended sword-fight in one. Although his age is never really established, to me he seems on the later side of adolescence. A little awkward and shy, but he does have his eye on Princess Flame, and the two make a cute couple. Flicker hardly ever gets credit for his great deeds, as his master Sir Loungealot tends to take all the credit. But among the idiotic king and his knights, it is Princess Flame (and of course the audience) who sees Flicker for who he truly is.
HIS PROS:
The idea of using Flicker within a Kingdom Hearts story for me dates back very far, to even back before I made attempts at them on deviantART. Finally enacting this character choice was a major part to this story, and I've built what I believe to be a VERY strong introduction for him. As for specifically why he would work so well with Ash, Flicker would essentially be the brains to Ash's braun. That's not to say Ash isn't intelligent in his own right, but he's rather like Sora in that he kind of does a bit of everything. Sora's party members were 2 drastic sides to the spectrum that Sora splits: Goofy was the strength, and Donald was the wisdom or magic. With this new party, Ash can be seen as more on the Goofy side, and then Flicker would take Donald's "mage" role in a sense. Interestingly, though, I found Flicker's appearance to liken Goofy's Kingdom Hearts look quite a bit. He seems fairly tall, likely a lot taller than Ash would be, and he's also kind of thin. He just seems like a great fit in terms of his visuals and personality. I believe I have a strong narrative in line for him, and there are significant moments within it that just make me really excited to write it. If I ended up choosing other characters, I think I would be REALLY sad about never getting the chance to see this through.
HIS CONS:
Now that I've praised Flicker a little too much, let me discuss why he might not be the best fit. Obviously, Flicker is a dragon, and that's a problem in itself. Many of the worlds I have in mind for the party to visit actually don't have dragons already, meaning Flicker would have to change to a similar species like lizards so he doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I know this has been done before in the actual Kingdom Hearts series, as Goofy and Donald and even Sora have had to shape-shift from time to time to fit in too. Sora will be doing some shape-shifting of his own, but at most it would be one species change and/or simply turning feral. It's easier for him because foxes are everywhere in these worlds. But with Flicker, it kind of reaches the point of "will I ever find another world where I get to be myself?", and I don't really like that.
Additionally, Flicker doesn't have ONE trusty weapon that he uses. He's a Renaissance dragon, using a bunch of different weapons and devices over the course of the series. If I were to pick him as a party member, I have NO idea what type of weapon he would use. I know Goofy and Donald's weapons of choice were kind of made up for the Kingdom Hearts series, but Flicker is different. While Goofy and Donald don't really use weapons in their source material, Flicker uses TOO MANY to give you a confident choice.
In summation, I've wanted to use Flicker for a long time, and I have a lot of great ideas I'd really like to put out there...but he may not work for a lot of the worlds the team goes to.
If you'd like to see and hear Flicker in action to help decide, you can watch Blazing Dragons here: http://kisscartoon.se/Cartoon/Blazi.....Quail?id=53682
Now onto our second candidates.
The choice of "Blazing Dragons" would only provide ONE party member for Ash, but Sora had TWO. While I felt this suited the newer inferior key bearer Ash, I also feel like he should have two as well, just to be fair. He should have that same mix, with Ash being balanced but having a party member for both ends of the spectrum. This second option gives us that luxury.
More recently, I have been introduced to a German cartoon series called "Simsala Grimm" that focuses on two characters that repeatedly go into a world where fairy tales actually happened, and they act as mediators to make sure those stories have their proper endings. (Sound familiar?) As the title suggests, the series features unique renditions of the Grimm fairy tales among others, some of which Disney themselves have covered. There's an abundance of [similar-looking] human characters to be expected, but there's also some talking animals of both feral and anthro variety. The series started in 1999/2000 and was picked back up for another season in 2010. Here the animation style stayed the same, but because of the big time gap there, a voice or two ended up different in the later season.
My general desire for Ash's party members is to make use of some under-utilized characters, and considering this series had to be shown to me, I'd say this series is a little under the radar. So, whether it's Blazing Dragons or Simsala Grimm that ultimately gets represented, this desire will still be satisfied.
The two aforementioned mediators are actually anthropomorphic animal characters. Well, technically they're stuffed animals brought to life or something, but you'll see what I mean. They are the main characters of the series, and they are my choices for this second option. First, there is Doc Croc, a lizard "scholar, philosopher, virtuoso"! Then there is Yo-yo, a blue tailless coyote (says the Wikipedia, but I don't really see it) who claims to be "the greatest adventurer since, well, ever"! Together, by the means of a magical flying book, they travel into the world of Simsala, where all these stories supposedly happened, and help those in need to set the stories on the right track. Yo-yo and Doc are never really the main focus of a story, as they're more just there to lightly assist or inspire the respective protagonists. Here's a look at them: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.co.....87c9754bc4.jpg
THEIR PROS:
While Flicker actually takes a heroic protagonist role in his source material, the role of Doc and Yo-yo is naturally supportive. They're not there to be the heroes themselves; they're just there to help bring that out of others. Knowing this, they can easily play second-fiddle to Ash, the fan-fiction's protagonist. And considering their personalities, the stories they go to, and a bunch of other things, it's difficult to see how they COULDN'T fit into a Kingdom Hearts type of storyline! Watching some episodes of Simsala Grimm with this intention of mine in mind is almost like watching a crude Kingdom Hearts cinematic, one where they ask the protagonist how they can help before going onto the bitch-work quests and Heartless fights.
And they can easily take the roles of Donald and Goofy as well, with Doc being the former and Yo-yo being the latter. Although they don't use weapons in the series, their personalities and claims to fame give me enough of an idea of what they could use. A "scholar, philosopher, virtuoso" and amateur alchemist could easily be a mage like Donald and use his kinds of weapons. And I'm tempted to simply give Yo-yo a Goofy shield as well, although I could see him with a sword or similar weapon. Put simply, these two characters ALREADY do this Kingdom Hearts sort of stuff!
THEIR CONS:
As I've said, I've only recently discovered this show and these characters. If I commit to using them in my story, that would require a lot of narrative adjustments. I'd have to brainstorm and deliberate their introduction in the world, which I already have slight ideas for, but it would still take time. And as I've said before, I've planned a lot of this fan-fiction around using Flicker, and changing that could change how certain parts of this story [and possibly some sequels for it, fingers crossed] would go.
Doc and Yo-yo appear incredibly small in their source material, but that is not a concern of mine, seeing how Ash was the same way but I'll be modifying him to appear normal-sized in the story. I am concerned about the visual contrast a certain character lacks here, though. Flicker and Doc Croc are both very different from Ash in appearance, being very different species and all. Yo-yo, however, as blue as he is, is [supposedly] a coyote, which is pretty close to a fox. I might just be overthinking this aspect, and if other people aren't bothered by it, I wouldn't be either. But I'm just saying the normal Kingdom Hearts party consists of a human, a duck, and a dog...thing. Those are all very different things to coincide with their different specialties. I just want to reflect/replicate that same dynamic with the characters I choose to focus on here.
In summation, I've found these newly-discovered characters are practically already doing Kingdom Hearts type stuff as they help out characters in different stories/worlds, but I've yet to figure out how I would properly establish and use them.
To see them in action, I present as an example that one time they helped Aladdin. Yes, THAT Aladdin. You can watch it here: http://kisscartoon.se/Cartoon/Simsa.....addin?id=64309
I'll probably be disappointed one way or another no matter which of these gets picked, but I'd like at least one of these trajectories to be properly utilized.
I'd really appreciate it if I could get as many opinions as possible on this. If enough people voice their support of a particular side, I'll hopefully go with that, no questions asked.
I'm REALLY torn on this, as you can see, having relied on the original idea for so long only to find characters that could potentially work better. I REALLY need your help on this.
PLEASE let me know how you feel about this in the comments below.
Thank you.

Thank you.
- while Flicker is a squire (a kind of side-kicky role), he seems more the hero than what little of the Knights of the Square Table I know anything about, which really isn't a whole lot. I find it interesting his name is Flicker, and he's an inventor, and sort of one of the only more sensical of the bunch -- that reminds me of an ant with a similar name: Flick, the ant inventor in A Bugs Life, who was kind of one of the only sensical ones of the bunch.
- Yoyo and Doc Croc also could stand on their own, but have more of the royal servants on a mission feel that Donald and Goofy have, with their specific objective laid out for them.
My feeling is you'd have to strip a lot of things bare and remake them to get Ash, Flicker, and Kingdom Hearts all fit together, whereas Yoyo and Doc Croc are almost ready fits, as you say, to drop into the Donald and Goofy roles. However, all I know of Kingdom Hearts is what I got looking at stuff on YouTube, admittedly a bad substitute for personal experience (however, "The Entire Story of Kingdom Hearts in Under 20 Minutes" was quite entertaining, and a fun after-work foray into something elseness). Maybe I'd sum it up better like this:
- Flicker seems to be a big-picture thinker who can set his own goals, who would be a sidekick only temporarily in something link an apprenticeship.
- Yoyo and Doc seem to be more tactical thinkers who achieve goals set for them and are fulfilled remaining in subordinate roles indefintely
If you intend for the side kick to become an independent hero -- like a squire working toward knighthood -- Flicker is a good choice. If you intend for the sidekick to remain a sidekick and content in that role, then Yoyo and Doc would be the better choice. My personal preference, if it were me, would be to drop Yoyo and Doc in -- I just think that would be easier in the long run.
Two other thoughts:
- you could always involve Flicker in the story in another capacity at some point, so if he is a character you like (and I can see why you would), you could have your cake and eat it, too.
- If you put Yoyo in there, please, PLEASE give him a tail! ^'v'^
It seems we work on similar wavelengths, as many of the points you've made are things I was thinking myself. While he is in a sidekick role as a squire, Flicker is more of a hero than the knights themselves. I believe that's yet another intentional flip on medieval story conventions, similar to making dragons good and humans evil. Flicker is certainly a great character, and the show he's in is truly unique and entertaining.
While he IS what I've wanted in a Kingdom Hearts story for a long time, I had that original idea when I was a kid, when I thought "he LOOKS the part, so why not?" and just didn't think about too many logistics. Now that I'm older and can make better connections and plans, I nearly instantly made that connection with the "Simsala Grimm" characters and knew they would fit the part much better. Admittedly, there's still some aspects of the Kingdom Hearts storyline that allude me, even though I've played all of the main games and some side ones. But it seems you've done some decent research, and I think you've made some accurate assumptions toward how things would work. ^^
Now to your ending points, I HAVE made the realization that it would be fairly easy to simply visit the world of "Blazing Dragons" and not take Flicker as a party member. If I were to do that, I think I would still be able to do all those great moments I had slated, or at least some version of them. I could even return there later and perhaps still do what I intended for the sequels, if I manage to get that far. I announced this story back in 2012 and still haven't started yet, so we'll see. X3
So if I DO go with Doc and Yo-yo, I believe that is what I'll do. If I tried to flip it and simply visit the "Simsala Grimm" world, I think that would be considerably more difficult, and I just can't see it going well.
As for giving Yo-yo a tail...I dunno...I think I know some people that might not be happy with that decision. ^^;
I didn't mind the research, it was fun, and fitting characters into cross-over scenarios is a neat exercise.
Anybody who can relate to Ash and thinks him simply awesome must be on a similar wavelength to mine ^^
If you haven't watched that "The Entire Story of Kingdom Hearts in Under 20 Minutes" video on YouTube, I recommend it! It's a beautiful piece of work. The person who did it does piece the whole story together across all the games in existence to the date he made it. It's like he did his master's thesis on the franchise and then summarized that in an entertaining video. It made me want to play the game, too, but we don't have it.
I like your idea of visiting Blazing Dragons with a fan fic rather than lifting Flicker and putting him in Kingdom Hearts. The couple of Blazing Dragons episodes I've watched could be written better, I think, and so I suspect if you wrote your own B.D. story, you could do the show a service. ^'v'^
And Yoyo -- oh, he so needs a tail. I watched part of an episode of Simsala Grimm, and when he turned around, I mumbled out loud, "Hey! Where's his tail?" He looks like the artist just didn't finish drawing him!
I'd highly recommend playing the Kingdom Hearts games as well, if and when you get the chance. Even the ones on the 3DS and PSP are worthwhile, but a little less so, as they don't have Donald and Goofy. ^^;
And yes, Ash is the best! ^^
Well, my idea was actually to still visit that world within the Kingdom Hearts story but just not have Flicker become a party member. I don't really have a strong enough idea to just straight-up do a Blazing Dragons fan-fiction, unfortunately. While I've wanted to use some of its characters in some form, the series isn't one of those major sources of inspiration that would bring me to write my own story on it. I've even had trouble finding motivations to write things for ongoing series, and that one ended in the 90s. I'm flattered you think I could, though. ^^;
I feel the same way about Yo-yo, but the friends of mine that showed me the series might want me to stay true to his source material there. But who knows; perhaps they would be alright with it. I could ask them on Thursday. ^^
As a bit of an update, I actually found a slight connection between Greenlight Media (who made "Simsala Grimm") and Disney! With this knowledge, Yen Sid or someone could simply call on them to assist Ash in his journey. I'd probably want to do it in a way where Ash sort of meets them himself, but I'm unsure about jumping into that Simsala world, and the option this Disney connection allows is a good fallback in any case. ^^;
I thought Simsala Grimm seemed to have a bit of a Disney-esque feel about it, but I just shoved that off as a misperception on my part. Sounds like there might be something in it, though.
But I was actually looking for a connection to another production company when I found the Disney one, hoping that someone from the other production domains could be responsible for summoning them. It just turns out Greenlight Media was kind of behind the launch of Disney Nature, as they made the "Earth" film. But yeah, it's something to work with nonetheless. ^^;
