Our car died yesterday. Looks like the transmission is out. We have no idea how long it will take to fix, or what the cost might be. Also have no way to buy groceries or for me to get to my day job, unless we hire an Uber or a cab. Seriously. I just want a little reprieve. Just a couple of months without any major trauma so we can catch up.
And on top of all that, our nation has new leadership that seems diametrically opposed to our values as Americans. Free speech, free press, free assembly - these concepts mean nothing to them. I prepared a statement yesterday to record, but with the turmoil of the breakdown I did not. Here is the statement in its entirety.
Today marks the beginning of a new age for our nation. The tides are going out, the walls have fallen. Our new leadership has committed to rolling back the clock on freedom for anyone different than themselves. Minorities, LGBT, alternative sexualities and lifestyles- we're all at risk, we're all targets.
In spite of the danger, I stand resolute. Those who would oppose our freedom to be different are not in the majority; history is not on their side. We shall oppose their agenda, fighting their ignorance and hate with knowledge and compassion. We shall fight tooth and nail, we shall earn our liberty.
Call your congressmen and senators. Be visible as one who stands up for themselves and others. Be a peaceful resistor to the whims of those who believe in oppression. Let our message of love and understanding be always on your lips. Practice peace and compassion, even towards those who would harm you.
You are loved. You are accepted. You are worthy. And you deserve better than what those in power have in store for you.

And on the political front, I just worry that if we don't start speaking up, our way of life will be threatened. I'm not sure if we have the luxury to not be into politics anymore. The current Republican platform lists porn as a public health and safety hazard, and I worry that adult art won't be far behind. Not to mention, there are rumors of reforming the old obscenity task forces - morality may be a matter of law like it was in the '50s. I'm not happy about that, and if we don't let our lawmakers know how upset we are, they'll think we don't mind the changes.
As for the positivity thing, I'm working hard to not let bad things stick with me. The way I see it, there's tons of pain and awful feelings out there. But since I don't think get another shot at life after this one I think it's important to enjoy what I get. The pain and sadness certainly registers - I'm not a robot - but I don't feel like it should be my focus. After all, why be upset when I could be having fun instead?
