There are people who can be happy with real friendships like normal people, and others who can only be happy when they control others and attack using fake friends. Be honest with him and let him know that he's hurting you. If he wont stop, then you'll know that he secretly gets pleasure from hurting people. If so, get rid of him. He will only ruin your life, get everyone against you when you wont be his bitch-pet-toy-watever, and he'll feel no guilt for it. You don't need that shit.
Whenever someone gets bitter and tries to get everyone against you with fake gossip, it may be tempting to take cover and try and stick with one or two close people you really trust while u back away from everyone, but u'll learn that that's the wrong way to do things. Put urself out there, be friendly and let people see the truth for themselves that he's a vicious liar. Because if you dont, he WILL put himself out there when he doesnt get his way, and he'll always win in getting the world against you if he's the only one with a voice. You wont have a voice if he spreads lies and everyone blocks you.
Let him know that he's hurting you, and if he still plays games and lies, defend yourself. Because if you dont, he'll manipulate all the people around you, and they won't realize how evil he is until it's too late.

But it's something a lot of people go through, and it's wicked difficult.
