So, today I went and pre-ordered Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands on Steam.
The game looks really promising with its open world and focus on co-op, there's not gonna be any player versus player like in The Division.
As for the plot, you will be playing a member of the elite unit Ghost Recon that gets sent down to Bolivia to take down the Santa Blanca drug cartel, who have very much seized power of the state and even have a local paramilitary force called UNIDAD in their pockets.
Your task is to take down the entire drug cartel, but you can't take on their leader right away as he's hidden away somewhere, so first you have to go after his lieutenants and bring them down so that he's eventually forced to come out of hiding, each mission you undertake can be completed however you like, seems that Ubisoft borrowed a bit from Metal Gear Solid V in terms of open ended missions.
Each mission provides you with different ways to complete them, if you're really skillful you might be able to sneak through an entire base without the alarm going off and none of the guards even catching sight of you or your teammates.
One of your most important gadgets is a drone that you can deploy at any time to recon an area or base, you can also upgrade it to be equipped with explosives, EMP or as a medic of sorts during combat, so its a very versatile tool that can change the course of a mission if used properly.
You can choose to do these missions in single player, which gives you three AI teammates to order around, or in co-op with other players online, which is the best way to play a game like this especially with friends.
Now, you will be able to customize your Ghost operative to your liking along with the many weapons you will obtain as seen in this trailer:
The clothing is purely cosmetic though, it doesn't affect visibility or anything, although hardcore tactical players will still go for the ghillie suit when sneaking through the jungles to add a sense of authenticity.
And if you've played Future Soldier, the previous Ghost Recon game, then you might see that the gunsmith mode is back and with more options for you to pick when customizing your weapons.
Also, here's a cinematic trailer that gives you an idea of just how brutal the Santa Blanca cartel is along with an interview from Polygon where members from the Ubisoft team discuss the authenticity of drug empire themes:
It certainly looks very promising and they're actually gonna hold an open beta for the game on the 23rd which will run till the 27th this month.
