I'm a bit perplexed as if I should consider the current console generation (WiiU/PS4/XB1) to be pretty much over now or what.

Hmm...they'll coast on the systems for now. I think Sony may be the first ones to release a new system though...but that's just a guess. Let me know if I'm right.

I feel this entire generation of consoles was nothing but disappointment. Xbox 1 was doomed from the start with big brother written all over it, and a bigger focus towards TV and internet surfing as appose to gaming. PS4 (arguably the most successful) is only surviving through contracts for console exclusives, and the Wii U flopped because of ambitions and a crappy launch.

its funny that current consoles can get really real regarding graphics....and yet...when someone make a 2d 16 bit game/sprite based game it sells well...just look at owlboy

Graphics aren't everything. Gameplay, story, the music, it's all just as important, if not even moreso. Owlboy is a great example for that, and it still has a certain charm about the way it looks :P
