Is this skeevy? (Adopt discussion)
So after looking at peoples adopts for sale the feeling hit me for the 400th time.
I am constantly hit with the desire to purchase an adopt, draw it, and then resell it (with a slight increase in price for the work I put in)
Generally, flipping designs like this is kind of skeevy, but I simply have no use for new adopts when I want to use the ones I have already. But some of these designs y'all make are SO GORGEOUS and I just need to draw them. But honestly that's all I want, to draw them once, and give them to a home that will love and appreciate them.
An alternative method I could say is hey I love this adopt, if you buy it I will draw you a discounted price wing it commission. At that point, it becomes more like a collaboration? Where I'd add on a bit more flair (like what I would do with this character if I owned it), because honestly that's what I love most, character designing.
I could talk myself in circles, but I want to know what you guys think. Have you seen this before? Was it kind of gross? How would people think of it if the artist was upfront and transparent about their intentions? Would you even be more incentivized to buy an adopt if you knew there was/could see an extra piece of art sold with it?
Sets out tea, I love discussion threads /)(\0v0

Some might be fine with it, but I know a lot will be really upset about it.
I would more suggest the latter than the former method.
Could sell the piece for higher if you add additional work to it.
So you make cash out of it along with the other person.
Best to work together as partners than sort of backhand it.
It's kinda like how I want certain people to comm me JUST because I love their character's design xD I just want to draw it but not really own it I guess.
I also really love character designing a ton jfc ;w;
I've seen adopts and know I just want to draw them once, so it'd be really cool if I could just be like, hey I'll draw the character for a discounted price! But you know, the artist might get hella upset, although personally I dont think I'd get upset. It'd be cool to see the new character getting immediate love <3
Though it would suck if you don't get to draw the character because someone doesn't want/can't afford the discounted com anyway lol.
Perhaps one could work with the original adopt artist to include it in the price? Nah, giving the option is better.
This is me thinking out loud, but glad to know you know my pain LOL
However if someone came to me and said "hey I'll throw in a bonus package to your customers" I'd be fucking THRILLED and I'd advertise the shit out of it, because it adds value to my adoptables and helps us both out in the end
Also like, I'd prefer the price uptick to stay reasonable but eh, who am I to judge pricing.
I think the wing it idea is a good way to deal with it. Artist collabs are wonderful for auctions especially where you get the adopt as well as work from a second artist. Most artist would probably be open to this and even invite it as it gives their adopt added value and it becomes win win as you both make profit and you get to satisfy your creative drive <3
I had honestly considered the idea of an add-on package of sorts -- where I do a minimum number of drawings to flesh it out further, or offer a discounted thing where changes can be made to the adopt permitting that it's allowed by the original creator. Or something.
Either way, it's interesting reading the responses here.
I'll admit I've thought about adopt flipping too. It really just kinda depends. Like, maybe do more than just one image of the character. Do a minimum of 3 before you try to resell because then it really does make it look more like you loved the character but you can't think of what to do with it and therefore are reselling it because you want to give it to someone that will love it and play with it.
Especially with Chibi designs I could die to draw them in my "more realistic" style, but I don't really want to own the design, just draw it.
Your approach of talking to the adopt maker and offering a discount for whoever buys the design is amazing!
sometimes I see designs that just make me go "I have no idea or story for this guy and definitely no money but I just love the design so much I wanna have and draw them"
actually #2 sounds pretty neat, I wanna do that too
