How I make stereograms
I made a new video about making stereograms.
Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJGL8-cNsqA
I think this guide is worse than the first one, but the technique here is a lot better. I'd recommend watching both and trying what you want. I'm sorry for things I named incorrectly, but I don't think names matter anyway, you can see what I mean well enough from the video.
Also here are some problems you might encounter while making stereograms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jSdqofApfM

You mentioned a depth map; is that what a depth map is? I thought a depth map was one of those grayscale versions of an image, where the whiter parts indicate foreground depth and the blacker parts indicates background depth. But I'm not sure.
Also about setting everything in stone. I think no one could handle doing it without merging the layers together, there's just too many layers otherwise. So that's the disadvantage of this technique. However, I don't mind it at all, I can easily fix any mistakes I made. Maybe I'll make a short video showing how to fix everything if you messed up with your depthmap.
