Trisca and what has been going on
Update. Heartbroken and in tears. Trisca was always my little angel. Now she still is, above the clouds.

I know I haven't uploaded much the last weeks / months, I am sorry for that. Here is a little update what's going on.
My cat Trisca was diagnosed with kidney malfuction last summer (we found out by coincident, as she did not show any signs back then). It was a shock as she was only 7 years old. Since then, I have tried so much... kidney diet, two different vets for opinions, a lot of medication. Let's say in short, despite everything we tried, her blood levels continuously got worse. I know more about the whole kidney issues meanwhile than I ever wanted to know (we really tried everything... infusions, medication, ultrasound...). I know there is no cure, the best thing that could happen is to keep it at bay so she hopefully is still around for as long as possible without suffering.
In winter, it got worse, no matter what we tried. Both the blood levels and Trisca's condition. I don't think I need to mention how much crying and emotional horror these months have been for me (as I have a very deep connection to her). I was very close to accepting it and releasing her. But all the fighting and love obviously wasn't in vain, and she recovered a little bit again. She was able to enjoy things again, like coming to my bed, cuddling, eating, things that she hasn't done for weeks when she felt so bad. She has gotten terribly thin, which every day reminds me, that even if she's feeling better at the moment, she is still very sick. I don't know how it will continue. Or for how long. I won't let her suffer, but I will do anything I can so she can enjoy every moment of her life. Right now at this moment, she does. And I am thankful for every day.
I am sorry that I haven't uploaded much or didn't offer commissions yet as planned. Of course I didn't stop drawing. It was (is) just a very hard time, when I had other things on my mind than keeping accounts up to date. I still update my Twitter account (also about Trisca), and will upload more again now.

I wish you many happy days with her.
I'll dump a bunch of info here. Never know if something could be useful.
- Reducing dietary protein & increasing saturated fats: yields increase in hydration (low thirst drive), reduced serum creatine, and provides more stable fats to cushion & energize kidneys.
- Mozzarella is good. Cooked eggs are good, but not too many yolks.
- High lignan flaxseed oil helps balance Omega 3:6, potentially reducing renal damage & lowering blood pressure.
- Manuka Honey is good for binding supplements/oils, and could be useful in reducing gluconeogenesis occurring at renal sites, particularly during states of starvation.
supplements:
- Very high levels of Taurine help to buffer kidneys (against sodium-induced damage, among other things). It gets destroyed when cooked.
- Ferric citrate inhibits phosphate absorption.
- Chanca Piedra & Cranberry Juice: inhibit Calcium Oxalate & Phosphate kidney stone formation.
- Green Tea Extract & Mung Bean Coat: are both HMGB1-Cytokine inhibitors
- Dried Oregano, Basil & Thyme are great additions, particularly the first one.
- Turkey mince is one of the better options in terms of low Phosphorus, but requires Ca supplementation.
At this moment, I give her anything she still wants to eat. She only weighs 2.2 kg (4.8 lbs) any more. Before that she got a kidney diet (which unfortunately also didn't help).
Unfortunately she is a very picky eater, so most of the cat food she does not eat anyways. I am glad I found at least some sorts that she would eat.
I also give her various pastes (vitamines) and tonics (renal friendly).
The creatinine levels in May 2016 were 3,2. In February 2017 it was 8,4 (contiuously went up, no matter what we did).
- Trisca currently gets SEB (slippery elm bark) against the stomach problems.
- Algedrat (I don't know the exact English expression), a white powder from the pharmacy to block / eleminate the phosphate in regular cat food.
- Antibiotics and pills to lower her too high blood pressure (since she's getting those medication, she's seems to feel better)
- B vitamins (against the anemia, which came with the kidney issues)
- SUC (a homeopathic medication which is very popular / known over here)
- We tried injections (hydration), but she started fighting, so we stopped it again as it was too stressful for her.
I do have Manuka honey here. Do you have any more info on that?
Carbohydrates and Protein both require the body to spend moisture in order to digest them, whereas fat releases moisture into the body when digested. Fatty acids are also important to the heart and muscles (which sound to have atrophied from reduced appetite), so increasing dietary fat wherever possible is probably a good call.
Apparently some cats like the taste or smell of cantaloupe juice, that might help make food more enticing. Blood also contains a lot of iron, so I don't know if cats would actually like the taste of Ferric Citrate as a phosphate absorption inhibitor. I've never tried either in a cat's diet, so I can't vouch.
If you make the food at home yourself, I could email you the recipe I use for minimizing renal damage; it's a long-term diet to avoid renal failure though, and not suitable for treating a pre-existing condition, so it'd just be a bunch of numbers and notes. Making the food as appetising as possible is probably the most important thing though, followed by increasing fats, piling on taurine supplements, and then increasing Omega 3. I think blueberries can have a slight vasodilation effect also, as does Omega 3 but the latter can thin the blood.
There's so much information, on top of the stress, it can all be pretty overwhelming.
Just give it your best. Hopefully it becomes reversible.
For my cat who had this condition, we had one catfood she loved we got from the vet. It helped against the dehydration effects because it was like 85% water and is formulated to be as low in protein as it can be. Renal issues are very tough for cats as their natural diet his very high in protein.
I'm very glad that you haven't given up on her, Tani. Ninka, my previous cat, lived for 4 years with high creatine levels after she was initially diagnosed. Each cat is different but reducing the work the kidneys have to do and using the little methods Fel described to increase appetite, keep her hydrated and increase her appetite is the best way. :)
I will have to remember the Elm bark to help with nausea. Sadly the nausea is from the toxins in Trisca's body that the kidneys can't filter. :(
I'm 200% positive you are doing everything you can, Tani. You are all in my and my family's thoughts.
Gaia bless

Snoofy old burr
man i miss him so bad
I remember when my cat Spatz was losing weight, I was very sad and worried for her as I didn't wanted her to suffer any longer. I remember crying with her that night as I was praying to God that he wouldn't let her suffer anymore and prayed again the next morning just seconds before she died. She lived with me and my family for 19 1/2 years, I loved her so very much and viewed her as my child.
I so badly miss her so much. Here's a photo of her before she passed on. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15206961/
Lots of love, hugs, and well wishes!

P.S I`m so sorry about your kitty
Normal vets do not get taught about animal diets/nutrients and will give you unnecessary medications that can help your pet, but screws with their body in other ways. Honestly they care more about the money with the type of unnecessary harmful things they do to animals.
