Do you play games on a console? If so, why?

This is the journal header. Nothing to see here, get to reading the actual journal yah goof!
Do you primarily play games on a console? A console gamer, if you will. If so, I'm genuinely curious as to why.
Now I'm looking for amicable and good willed discussion, so don't be afraid about being truthful. But be prepared for differing viewpoints.
Reason I'm asking? Well it baffles me that people play on consoles, and I wanna hear some reasons as an outsider looking in and former console gamer myself.
So go ahead, lemme hear 'em :D

More comfortable? What's more comfortable exactly, in what way? That's a bit loose x3
As for comfort, I can sit back when i'm using a controller, but when i'm using mouse and keyboard on a PC, i have to sit up and i can't do that for very long. Controllers are also more comfortable to use for me, keyboard and mouse takes up quite a bit of space
I agree that controllers are ergonomic, but there are plenty of (cheap) ergonomic computer peripherals out there. Which I have, because otherwise my wrists would be pure cartilage by now xD
The whole "takes up too much space" thing kinda falls apart when you consider that you'll already have a space dedicated to the computer and monitor anyway so it's kinda moot. (assuming we're talking about a full on PC, not a laptop.).
I could probably list more reasons why i prefer console, but I didn't get much sleep last night XD
Console exclusives.
Portability; it's much easier to take your console over to a friend's house than it is a PC. Granted, laptops make this easier but it's still not quite as plug'n'play.
Nostalgia.
Comfort.
For some, the controller is a more intuitive device than most PC inputs. This is becoming less and less of an issue these days. That said the reverse is that PC inputs are more sensitive and accurate.
Back in say, the cartridge era yeah exclusives were a bit more forgivable since consoles had different cart slots or whatever.
Portability....now that is a pretty good reason. I can't deny that. Trust me I've lugged a PC and all it's parts from one house to another, it's quite the pain in the arse xD
Consoles you can just stick in a carrier bag and BOOM! You're good to go. Not like you need to take a whole TV with you :D
Nostalgia. Would you mind expanding on that? You have me intrigued :3 (same for comfort).
As for the input methods: since switching to mainly gaming on PC it'd feel very strange going back to a controller. Personally I think they're worse than mouse and keyboard, but as a means of connecting man to machine by way of thumbs, controllers are a perfectly adequate conduit. The disadvantage there however is that PC allows for many more input methods for say, those who might have restricted movements, disabilities etc. But granted, that's quite a niche case.
Fair enough though, input methods are a case of preference more than anything else we could discuss....other than, games themselves x3
Nostalgia is a good answer for the nintendo.
Gameboy just something to keep my mind busy when in a doctor's office or something.
But nostalgia is one of few reasons I still have consoles around. Because sometimes you just wanna play an old classic.
PC you having to spend almost twice what you would on a console in order to play current and new games
And consoles are limited in games and most games require you to pay to play online
But the main reason why i play on console is for exclusive games like bloodborne, Nioh, Ni No Kuni, and some upcoming games that are for the PS4 look like they're gonna be fun
What? Where are you buying games on PC? Nearly all multi-platform games on PC are cheaper than console. Mainly because PC primarily uses digital distribution which, unlike physical releases, doesn't have to cover for overhead.
Pay to play online is a huge scam if you ask me. "Hey you already pay your ISP for an internet connection, but now you also have to pay us to connect to that internet service to play games online!"
As for exclusives, I'm going to ask this: Would you still buy those games on that particular console, if you could buy it anywhere? So would you buy it on a different console given the chance?
While a console i just buy it, plug it and play (and it should go that i use my console mainly for Single player games and all of those good japanese rpg games available on there)
And if it was on PC, yeah, id buy it, probably need to get a new PC to even run those games in A playable way, also i have a mouse and keyboard for FPS games on console, bevause there's no replacing that with a controller
Yes I won't try and sugercoat it, a midrange PC is kind of expensive. But for $500 you could easily get one that played most games at consistent 60 on medium graphics settings, easy.
And sure getting into PC gaming is expensive, inititally.
But after that initial investment it's considerably cheaper than playing on consoles, especially when you factor in cheaper games and not having to pay for online multiplayer. Those two are the real stinger that most people don't realise. I certainly didn't for the longest time, even after switching to PC.
Granted consoles do have some degree of reliability. I can't say no to that. But it's still weaker hardware overall, and games still run worse. I'll posit to the end of the Earth that PC is better in every way (or....nearly every way at least).
But I can't stop people if they wanna console. I'll just give reasons as to why it's worse that's all. We all free to do what we want in life after all :3
Still, thanks for your points and joining in. As well as keeping it civil. Whenever I have this kinda talk with anyone there's always shit fits xD
Is that Xbox is more for FPS and FPS multiplayer people, while PS4 has a shit ton of good rpg's and weird games that are pretty interesting
The wii has nostalgia and PC is mostly multiplayer and fun
Also all my irl friends have a PS4 so that was a big reason, along with bloodborne
But I honestly wanna get back on PC again, i invested so much shit on steam games and i miss getting insulted on CS:GO for being a furry. And I personally think g everyone shoyld own a PC, and maybe 1 console MAX, for single player games
Back during the early life-span on the 360 I was still in secondary school, and pretty much everyone I knew and considered a friend played on the 360. So I've been there myself, I know very much what that feels like. Aaah, good times.
I'd disagree with the very narrow summaries of what the platforms offer....but now having said that I'm gonna counter my own point by saying, they are just broad summaries xD Good job me! Thanks me! For reals though, the PC easily offers the broadest selection of games imaginable, no contest. I even count older, previous generation titles into that statement.
I started out with an NES back in the day, and there's just something about popping a game into the console and starting it up for the first time that never gets old for me.
And to play devil's advocate, I can see the draw for newer gen as well, considering things like console exclusives, maybe less worrying about hardware capabilities (depending on the game, developer, etc.), and for the social thing. It's a lot easier to play something as a local co-op on console than it is for PC, assuming the game has said feature.
Sure exclusives can be a draw, but they're the wrong kind of draw. Mainly because consoles exclusives simply aren't a good thing, since they're hugely anti-consumer and if anything else, not good for the publishers. Modern triple-A game development is a time and money black hole, but then they turn to the audience and say "Now only some of you are allowed to give us your money". Considering the triple-a games market is run by corporate fat cats....it just seems really backwards to me. Get rid of console exclusives, make the games multi-platform, more gamers get to play them, publishers and developers get more money because more people get to play them. Honestly it's baffling the suits in charge still aggressively cling-on to exclusivity.
Couch co-op is actually far less prevalent in the current gen that a lot of people realise. In fact so few console games even have split-screen multiplayer anymore. But historically, yes I would attribute consoles as having the couch co-op advantage (when I say historically, I also include last gen). Not to say they outright don't do couch multiplayer but it's not as big of an advantage compared to previously. In fact the last time I even played split-screen multiplayer was on my aforementioned N64 with good old Goldeneye just a couple years ago. Fuck me that's a good time <3
Second: if you're interested in classic gaming, and for that click-in-the-system deal (totally with you on that one), you should check this link out.
To state in advance, I completely agree with you. They're shooting themselves in the foot by essentially saying "neener neener, you can't have this game because you don't have the right system." But to provide a counterpoint, from a marketing perspective, I can see why they do it. If a game looks good enough, and people want it enough, they might go out and get a new system just for this game. And after they have the system, well then, it just doesn't make any sense not to keep getting OTHER games for it, does it?
Sad, but you're right. couch co-op is going the way of the dodo. It seems that Nintendo is the last bastion for it, since all the other systems seem to be promoting pretty heavily their online co-op in various forms. Which, by god, thank you Nintendo. That's a lot of what I loved about the old systems. Sitting down, playing a game, and talking shit to someone sitting right next to you. That's when the GOOD insults come out. Because you had to choose your words carefully. Go to far, and congrats, it's not like voice chat where you have no consequences, they can (and often WILL) punch you in the face-type region. Also, I miss Goldeneye. I had a lot of good multiplayer memories from that game. And I was so happy to see it get reborn with Goldeneye: Source. new memories, good nostalgia, and I can play it with online friends and open a whole new world of shit talking. Good times.
And what you said about console exclusives, good point. Doesn't make it any less anti-consumer, good marketing or not. It's just greedy corporations that's all. But sadly that's what controls the industry.
Backwards capability is getting just downright abusive on consoles now, You buy a game and have to buy it again on the next one?
At least with PC you can still play like everything still, its silly when you think about how much money is wasted on consoles from equipment to games, towards vip services (playstation plus and xbox gold and whatnot), DLCS...
Then like 4 years its a paperweight that depends on internet services that are now disabled. (I still can game on my Windows XP computer when the games are newer than its OS) Go figure.
Cant even play online without a membership fee (xboxone/ps4) its just ... NAH no thanks. (I already pay for internet I don't need to pay like your internet bills also am I right?).
Needless to say, backwards compatibility might as well not exist on current gen consoles it's fucking pathetic. I can guarantee the only reason it came to the XBone is because enough people complained about it that Microsoft could no longer ignore it.
Also I massively agree with you that all of that stuff goes to such massive waste because of the rampant erasure of console history one generation at a time. And I've said a couple of times in this thread that online services are a scam. I already pay my ISP for an internet connection, why the bloody hell am I paying something else to use my internet service that I'm already paying for? Bleck! A scam I tell yah.
And PCs do the whole online thing so effortlessly. Play online without subscriptions, type insults with your keyboard. Then minimise the game and file your tax returns :D
No wait, that's boring. But even so, you get my point. They're far more multi-functional.
Not to mention most of the console exclusive games do not intrigue me anyways.
And I know PC is the superior platform but I really don't care I just want to play a game and have fun with something I'm comfortable and familiar with.
Is actually very few and far between, like any community there's always the outspoken douches but they're a loud minority.
Most of the time if you see the whole "PC Gaming Master Race" thing, it's a joke. Only the aforementioned douche-bags say it straight faced and seriously.
Still I can understand preferring familiarity, it can be a pain going through the adjustment period. In my experience though, once you adjust you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
