What Cinco de Mayo is really about

✧✩ ~Welcome to Vertfay Palace, feel free to stay as long as you may wish~ ✩✧ Most think of it as Mexican Independence Day, but that's actually September 16th.
The real reason Cinco de Mayo exists is because back in the 1800s, France had tried to invade Mexico in an attempt to make them a french colony (Mexico was in deep debt). So the Mexicans fought back on this day and basically told France to get out, and it was a battle at the town of Puebla.
Today celebrates their victory at that town, called "The Battle at Puebla".
