Missing the Point...

Every time I do fan art, it always seems I've had a few people over several sites nit pick little differences between the way I draw the character and how it's different from the original style that the character is drawn in. It's a little tiresome to keep addressing the issue when it comes up so I'm just going to address it here and calmly point people to this journal whenever it's brought up again...
Any fan art that I will draw will never be exactly like the style of the original.
Nor will it ever be.
Nor should it be.
Nor do I want it to be.
I will always draw the characters in my own style. If I were to simply copy the way that the character is drawn it it's original style beat by beat then I don't feel like I would be bringing anything new to the table. By giving it my own unique touches, I feel like I'm personalizing things a bit and giving it my own unique touches that (hopefully) nobody ever has before.
Variety is the spice of life after all. :)

Know what? Fuck this... You chose the title for this journal damn right and you're looking at it the correct way
I like it, even though it does look more "horsey" than the MLP original.
Just thought of one other you did, I loved it when you drew Spyro the Dragon.
I say continue doing fanart and your originals the way you want to, and give the over-critical nitpickers a raspberry. :)
Misshapen bratz doll ponies just aren't my thing. :p
It comes down to three things.
1) The artist as a human being. I generally do not hire jerks and assholes. I try to hire decent people just trying to make a living.
2) The artist's *style*. Every artist has a distinct style. Some styles go well with certain kinds of commissions. Some just do not. I never, ever ask an artist to copy someone else's style, because it's not why I hire them in the first place, and it's quite unfair to the artist.
3) That the artist will enjoy what I ask them to do. An artist that hates a particular topic will not do well in my commission and they'll hate doing it. Lose-lose. I prefer win-win.
Fan art is no exception. I'm going to have someone draw Dark Griffon in pure Studio B style, then I'll look up an artist that enjoys that - there's lots of them! But plenty of artists put their own unique spin on the characters, and I like that a lot, too! It's all good.
It turned out all my references were drawn by a single, deceased artist, and she was trying very hard to copy his style. I told her to get an idea of the character's appearance, throw the references away, and redraw in her own style, to make the character her own. (The original artist was certainly not going to mind -
She did. And now she's having a blast.
Of course nothing of mine has rabid fans.
This would probably be the same people that would go and cry about there is not ENOUGH fan art out there.
