Adopts are an odd thing. They either sell immediately or sell last minute.

Also to some people, a starting bid of $25 (SPECIALLY on facebook) Can be to high for a start bid. But this depends on the artist, the design, etc.

There are a lot of variables. I've heard a lot of people also like flat rate adopts.

Sadly it's imposible to sold it for less.. the price for a piece like that is higher than 25$... We start all our auctions with underpricing amounts as starting bids and it can go higher or not... is part of the auction game... we can win or lose money depending on how it ends... if it doesn't sell as an aution it will become a continuous offer with a fixed price (but the fixed price will be higher).

Last time we offered lots of designs, with a base made by us (with some modifications on hair, height, markings, eye amounts), in an original species, each of them came with a refsheet (front and back, eye and face closeup, height comparision, color palete) and we were open to make little modifications in the design if asked by the buyer. The starting price was 25$... it doesn't scalated more than that, and from 6 designs, only 2 got sold.

It was really sad. Maybe is not our thing to sold adoptables.

I wanted to make fullpainted characters as adoptables, but it wont work. the price will higher than a fullbody, since you will be paying for the drawing AND the design. that really turn me off, consdering how things are resulting when we underprice ourselves and don't get it to work even. u.u

It boils down to the design than Because people like say, Vexstacy who is very well known who does full drawings, no base and they sell 80-150. Other artists from 50-90. Adopts for 50.

So I'm not sure at this point.

well at that point your not only selling the concept, but is fair to say "it comes with this piece" and that raise the value. ^^

but again, it will probably not happen. Maye adopts are not my thing.

It's pretty situational with adoptable.

The main factors are as follows.
Species, Gender, Colors, Permissions to said adoptable (Changes/Alterations) , Price, Art Style, and NSFW/SFW.

Me personally I'm not really one for adoptables because I simply have too many characters I already need to get art for and such. Not to mention this IS Furaffinity after all. If it's not porn, almost no one will take interest in it, that's nearly 90% of the community. You're likely better off advertising these adoptables on more family friendly platforms. Such as Facebook or Twitter even.

Hmm well given that, it sounds like they would go decently well. I've seen some adoptables go for around 75$ - 100$ from some artists, and I have no idea how. I guess it completely depends on what your watches really like from your gallery.

Don't take it personally. Adoptables are a trend. Like any trend it depends on how saturated the market is. When I started seeing every other journal was an adoptable journal I knew it had hit its peak. You might get lucky and sell some but I wouldn't count on it. It's probably better to focus on personal art and commissions and have adoptables be an every once in awhile when you feel like it for the fun of it thing.

Indeed Zid... that's why we don't make a patreon. It won't work... we think this could be a little diferent consdering the huge market that exist about adoptables, but maybe is not our target audience, nor our thing in terms of furry artwork. ^^

I think it's best to just keep doing the amazing stuff you do for yourself and others and focus on finding what brings you joy and happiness. I know in my case while doing that hasn't brought me much money (partly my own fault-commissions stress me out too much) the odds are good if I did take commissions I'd do OK.

More and more people are getting into this fandom which means more competition but at the same time it means more chances your work will connect with people.

Tottally agree. We can still try new things while doing the same things we enjoy and are known for. ^^

I never hopped along this train at all. I always saw it as a waste of money when I could use that money for a unique idea or commission.

Well.. I never bought an adoptable... so I guess I understand. However I know that there are people out there that can't or just don't want to create their own designs, so they prefeer to buy an already created one... or people that want to buy an idea they liked and that they wasn't able to come with, and respect the one that had the idea to the point of buying that idea instead of copying it into their designs...

Don't know.. in marketing is a very simple thing.. people prefeer to "See" what they are buying most of times... commissioning an own idea that can't be view at the momment of paying, because it doesn't exists as a drawing "yet" or that the creator doesn't even have a clear picture in their mind or can't comunicat that idea clearly to the artist or doesn't believe the artist will be able to reproduce that idea in the same way they imagined... those things push away some people of commissioning their own design ideas and preffer to buy already made things (also already made designs are always cheaper than custom made ones... that's another factor).

if money is not an issue and artist and creator can comunicate clearly, then yep.. I'm tottally with you... but it doen't work that way always, sadly. u.u

An idea to make them marketable again maybe would be to draw multiple pieces to go alongside the original reference and sell it in a sort of a bundle. Sure it would take more time to do, but it could still be done on the side, and I honestly think more people would bite if they get extra content with the original sona in question.

yes, if the price is low... dificulty if the price is fair (specially whit people who consider that fair is high)... imposible is the price is high... we make HQ Semirealistic pieces most of times, so we will be talking about a character that's worth more than 150$ (the less) if it comes with extra pieces. It could work... but it could work that the character of 30$ got sold too, considering the cheap it is... low prices make it marketeable too.

The other alternative that maybe may work, is not to come with extra "already made pieces", but "extra non made custom pieces"... so the price of the character design will include 2 free commissions of that character, of some kind, as a special offer. That sounds like an interesting idea too... or let the client "add more" to the price of the character to INCLUDE extra custom pieces (with a reduced price maybe or in packs)... that's a similar way of charging of how I work. I let the client choose the prices of their commissions, I set a price range depending on what they ask for, and let people choose how much they will invest, and I add as much extra time/detail as the price allows me, but eing super clear in what is the base piece/price amount of detail.

it may work.. or may not... right now... I will stick to what's already working for me ... don't have time to experiment so much, cause I need to eat (this is my job).. and I'm already making some experimental commissions right now... is too risky and the consecuences of bad planing or a bad season would be catastrophic to my economy. XD
