The illustration works well, I think. It does seem to be a transition for Sharue into someone a bit less feral.

Yea its meant to show her moving from a hive ganger to a member of the military, her mentality changing as she learns there is so much more as well as new connections.

Things like explaining why issa let them stay in the warp so long for one. Eric needs to leave the ship before it goes down which I think I have figured out and then the next few parts furthering the plot instead of being filler.
