Jyoo C Thoughts 40: SCREAMING MY HEAD OFF!!!

I JUST GOT BACK INSIDE FROM MY SIDE YARD WHERE MY IMPALA IS PARKED!!! I JUST GOT HER OLD ENGINE TO TURN OVER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 22 YEARS!!! It's awfully gritty sounding but that's the first noise that 283's made in over two decades!!!! A battery and a screwdriver and blind luck!!! I'M SO HAPPY!!! The distributor dropped right down into place, the fan started spinning, everything is engaging properly! Once I shore up some things and get that darn dash working I'm going to see if I can't press my advantage and get an idle going!
BUT THE ENGINE
AHHHHHH!!!!!!!
SO HAPPY!!!

Gritty huh? Well when I see the VIDEO I'll better be able to know what you mean. But it could be just that your modern ears aren't used to hearing an old engine's cranking sound despite the youtube videos. It'll also sound grittier if it's cranking slow (drained battery, weak starter) so we'll see about that.
I have no way of really knowing if that distributor feel into the correct toothing when it plopped in. Just expect to maybe have that distributor be your first big headache with getting her to start. What I mean is if we didn't have it sitting into the absolutely right toothing then when the engine goes to fire sparkplug one, the distributor isn't going to be in time to fire it. You gotta make sure that if you have the #1 piston at top dead center that the distributor button (the round part under the cap that spins with the little metal tab on the top and side of it) is lining up to a spark plug connector under the cap. Sounds hard I know, but youtube is your friend. We'll see, maybe it popped in fine and there will be no problem. Just make sure to put that hold down clamp and bolt back into the base of it so it doesn't pop out.
lol it didn't last for more than a few seconds but I could tell it was little rust particles in there grinding as well as dirt. Once we shore things up inside and get her ready for her engine to make some noise I'll try to get her idling and I WILL record that. We were expecting rain and it was pretty ugly outside when I went out; I just kinda was in a mood where the weather wasn't going to stop me so I went out and started wrestling the hood off; careful not to scratch the bondo.
Will do man! It dropped down like an inch or so, so it looks like it's in place! But I'll be sure to latch it into place!
Maybe, or that's how those engines sound perhaps. Those old engines have a very 'dry grindy' sound to them, as bad as it sounds I don't think it's anything more then the sound of the flywheel gear and starter gear running against each other... if I were to guess. The reason I say that is because Johnathon W, a guy I watch, started up a 66' Belair and it sounded grindy too.
I actually wanted to point that out too and ask. In his video he originally said that the car was an Impala and corrected his title later. If he's right, then for some reason the Impala and Belair of that year look basically identical! Look, THIS is a Belair! http://www.superchevy.com/features/.....chevy-bel-air/ I remembered how you and your dad couldn't find a year of Impala that matches Cassandra's face exactly so it got me thinking.. is she actually a Belair?
The engine bay in the video looks identical to hers, from how I remember it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49PArkWHCzM
Well they're gears meshing, so it would have dropped in place half and inch in any other place in its turn radius too. But I know we were careful so..
If I recall correctly the bel-air was an offshoot of the Impala design. lol and no, I have her factory information, she's an impala through and through. Plus all her detailing says "IMPALA"
lol and again I think that's because they were the same car except they did something different with the styling options or something. I don't recall which.
It should be good! lol and I was talking to dad and we'll try to do an encore start for you and record it when the weather allows.

Another 1966 Chevy commercial. This was a film that was shown in the dealerships: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wVCup6d1nM
Really? D8 Why have I not known this? You have the link handy to your videos? I'm curious~ :3
And no not yet other than the one before I actually bought her. I've been taking a lot of little videos and I'll have my editing guy splice them all together to make longer episodes.
That makes sense. :D Well, whenever they are ready, I would love to check them out <3
