stolen from
kamui b/c they are awesomecakes but modded b/c i can't stop at 10 apparently so i just keep talking and suggesting. Some of these are my favourite artists and songs, but i left a lot of my favourite artists out b/c i had to pick based on the entire album working as a cohesive collection that said something.
Dark Was The Night -- Various Artist (I have this on vinyl as well and let me tell you that you need to get your paws/claws on this album if you want to know anything about indie music, just look at these artists on it: http://www.darkwasthenight.com/artists. Plus they have fucking lucifer falling from heaven as it's
Takk... -- Sigur Ros (this band is so fucking spiritual and amazing to listen to. This album makes me so happy to listen to during........anyting.......i want to make love, art, happiness, and just.......god..... Y can't all music just have as much emotion as this band makes. Get this album and listen to it till you die. )
both "Palo Santo" and "Rook" (yes i cheated and put 2 albums b/c they are that fucking good)-- Shearwater (2006's Album of the Year according to National Public Radio. I have it on vinyl and my god its.........fucking amazing. I 've listened to it fully maybe about 50 times on vinyl <3 plus it's my favourite band and one of the best live shows ever. So much so that i got them to say yes to play at my school for the spring concert, but as some know that didn't happen b/c the school fucked over our budget. Both been on Misra and Matador indie labels which both have some fucking great music to boot.)( last year saw one of the best indie albums ever thought of. All songs on this album will blow ur mind. Some of the instriments included are the double stringed dulcimer, the waterphone, and one of those keyboard things you blow into a hose to play.)
Our Ill Wills--Shout Out Louds (probably my most listen to album. I listened to it at least twice a day for like 2 months. Go out and buy it.........FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS INDIE ROCK BUY IT AND SUPPORT THIS BAND SO THEY CAN MAKE MORE MUSIC FOR ME TO BE INSPIRED BY.)
(I really want to put a bright eyes album in the list, but I'm more in love w/ all of it and think his best works are off of many albums and to me there was none that had me coming back over and over. but put together and selected out of them all, he's one of my favourite artists and my favourite lyricist, along w/ Ben Gibbard
Push The Button--The Chemical Brothers (This band has always been ahead of the times but I love their fucking great electronica. This Album has so much to offer a listener. Plus so many of the songs are used as comercials and samples it's not funny. What a fucking great band w/ a style and energy that can't be matched)
The Flying Club Cup -- Beirut (This band is made up of members of A Hawk and a Hacksaw and Neutral milkhotel. It's basically a balkan gypsie orkestra that plays at parties for victorian era ghosts. That's how i sum it up. It's a fresh of breath air to listen to this album and drive, just blasing it.)
Ragged Wood (w/ SunGiant ep when you buy it in vinyl :P, suckers) -- Fleet Foxes. ( this one really came out of left field b/c after they got their lead singer the band just got rid of all their old shit and recorded their debut album w/ their new singer. I saw this band live at Pitchfork last year and got their album on vinyl. It's so strang that when i saw them they were relatively unknown, where i heard them on the radio in my car like a week ago. Great music to listen to in the car)
Picaresque -- The Decemberists ( how can i say this.......get this album.......and you'll hate the new one. To grow w/ the band to see them fuck it all up w/ trying to make such a mediocre album is lame. their latest had to much focus on making it all fit as an album and tell a story, and not on what made the band amazing in the first place: originality, victorian & pirate lyrics, folk, unique instriments, and a fucking amazing eye for composition. Every song is treated like they are making a memorial for a lost child. come on....: "We Both Go Down Together", "Eli, The Barrow Boy", "The Bagman's Gambit", "From My Own True Love (lost at sea)", "The Engine Driver", "Of Angels and Angles", "16 Military Wives", and "The Mariner's Revenge Song".......wow what a piece of art that is.
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea -- Neutral Milk Hotel (*cums* there are few things that are better than just yelling and singing along to this at the top of one's lungs, I know all of the over 8mins of Oh, Comely by heart. I love it so much :3. This is what indie music should be. Fuck choruses)
Plans -- Death Cab For Cutie. (I love to listen to this album when i'm down, a lot of these songs have a lot of meaning to me as well. I would have to say that this is the best composed as an album out of any Death Cab album as well as the one w/ the best lyrics. I fucking love love love love "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" as you should know.)
Armchair Apocypha -- Andrew Bird (i've seen him twice, once in the Chicago Civic Opera house. The man is a musical genius and is so much better live. He uses looping machines so he can play a lot of his music with only himself w/ whistling, clapping, singing, guitar and violin. God this is such a perfect album)
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah -- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (What a fantastically strange band that just makes music sound so much fun that anyone can sound amazing and blow minds)
Prompts/Misues--Foundry Field Recordings (think super chill and innocent and loving. It's not really fair but think of Death Cab mixes w/ Architecture in helsinki and Grizzly Bear. God there are so many great songs even one that has made me cry before b/c it was so beautiful: it was broken strings and i'm glad i shared that moment w/ Wuffie, he's such an amazing person.......hahahahah that made me thinking of falling in the hottub just now)
Enter the Wu-Tang-- Wu-Tang Clan (best rap album ever, i don't care what you say you will not change my mind. b/c you ain't got shit on the Wu-Tang Clan)
Masters of the Universe -- Binary Star (unknown rappers from Detroit prison made an album then remade it into this one and then broke up. This is a musical master piece, not just a rap one. If you like rap or even the idea of rap, listen to this and you'll be stunned by how good this shit is)
(i'm going to cheat again and put 2 albums for the same band b/c i can't choose) "The Funeral" & "Neon Bible" -- The Arcade Fire. You need these albums.......now. That's all i really can say w/out sucking the bands dick and saying how much they are awesome >:3)
Fingers Crossed -- Architecture In Helsinki (nothing can really come close to the innocents that is this album. When i play it, it just reminds me of childhood experiences and memories. It just captures those feeling so well)
Ima Robot -- Ima Robot (i can garantee, you've played a videogame w/ one of the songs on this album. hahahaha.... and all the songs are so fucking good on here, it's ridonk)
Starfish -- The Church ( you most likely have no idea who this is and if you do , i love you so much. This is a new wave band in the 80s. They kick The Cures ass so much. Listen to this album and you'll never think of the 80s like you have before. One of their songs was in Donnie Darko too)
Broken Social Scene -- Broken Social Scene. ( let's face it they have Stars and Feist in this fucking epic band. I've also seen them front row and they rock live, what energy and great composition)
A Mad & Faithful Telling -- Devotchka (if you can't tell by now i'm extremely into Modern Folk, and this ain't no diffy. I love them and so should you, i don't think most can, but they did the soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine if you're into that stuffs)
The Grey Album -- DJ Dangermouse (it's a mix of the Beatle's White Album and Jay Z's Black Album. I don't really like either of them seperate but omg Dangermouse can't do wrong and this changed rap forever and i wish more would take a cue stop likeing shit like Lil' Wayne or most of Kanye or 50 cent. Omg did i mention good rap.... I like it a lot :P. I used to hate almost of it....and still do, but at least i found something really good out of it)
Wet From Birth -- The Faint (saw them live front row, and let's just say i can't stop loving this band. This is what new rock is and should be. Plus electronica is cool people get w/ it :\)
Yellow House -- Grizzley Bear (you'll never find better music to go to bed to and just dream, it's so nice. I've done it so many times. It also helps w/ the creative self i think, I saw them at pitchfork last year)
Hold On Youngsters -- Los Campesinos ( every song is fucking amazing and the lyrics are oh so perfect for that band, oh and i've seen them live)
Before The Dawn Heals Us -- M83 (i've seen them front row and in a tiny venue, omg....*cums again* This is such an amazing album and needs to be blasted as loud as you can)
The Smiths -- The Smiths ( you know you love them, you know you'll never see them live ever in ur life :\ depressing like their music, but it's so beatifully depressing)
Greeting from Michigan: The Great Lakes State--Sufjan Stevens ( such an amazing album of folk music that blows minds and hearts. it's such a treat to listen to it in it's entirety)
F# A# (Infinity) -- Godspeed You! Black Emperor (come on this band fucking is sooooooooo good. It's the sound track to the apocalypse as i like to say and this album was even used in 28 Days Later, my favourite zombie movie.)
and no Beatles will ever be in my faves b/c i hate them.......and if you say something about that i don't care, i just don't like their music. I have some of their albums on original vinyl and i can easily say you have to be on drugs to get it. Most are just sillly love songs or others are just pop hits w/ shitty lyrics. Just my opinion. I don't care how influential they were i don't like them. Hitler was influential but i don't like him......yes i just compared the beatles to hitler, but then again they compared themselves to christ. I respect them as artists and love them for that, but i just don't like their work, and that's all i have to say on that.

If you dig "Michigan", definitely check out "Illinois", if you haven't already.
As for GY!BE, I was blown away by "Lift Your Skinny Fists to Heaven", their double album. Pity those guys have fallen off the face of the earth, I thought they were evolving into something fantastic.
Just to clarify a common misconception... the Beatles didn't really compare themselves to Christ. A reporter was talking to John Lennon about religion, and John joked that the Beatles were selling so many albums that they were "more popular than Jesus Christ right now". It was one of those goofy "ain't I wacky?" John things to say, but they put it on a magazine cover as if he was comparing himself to Christ, and it all went downhill.
I have Illinoise but it's not as good as Michigan. It's just too poppy for me to pick as the best albums i've heard.
I love that Godspeed album and i was going to put that one up, but i just chose Infinity instead. Even thought that's one of the best albums ever :3
And i don't like the beatles b/c of their music, not b/c of their vision or their controversy :3
I grew up with the Beatles being played nearly constantly, not just the 'hits' but all of their albums... so for me they're more or less the pinnacle. Just a part of my life, y'know...
But my favorite song by them is definitely "No Cars Go" somehow I nabbed a demo version of it and it eventually led to buying an album of theirs.
I'll be sure to check out some of the stuff you mentioned, I like most of the indie stuff that has good/unique vocals in it.
