I suppose I need to force my pessimistic self to remember the American values of freedom and diversity

Defeatism is a drink that people drink when they want to pout rather than be positive and productive. Whether or not you like the current state of things does not take away from America itself and what it embodies and espouses - America is glorious and you should do everything positive to keep it that way.

And it is aptly more important now than ever to not be a pessimist.

In the past year I actually regained a sense of patriotism because I really began to understand the fundamental beliefs of America, and that I should always keep pushing on and always aspiring to make the situation better. I am extremely politically active, but I of course, can't help but feel very depressed sometimes.

I strongly suggest visiting the developing world, fellow first world allies and notice how much more you have just by being here. Having spent years abroad, you really learn to appreciate how good you have it - even if it doesn't seem that grand from your perspective at the moment. It's not that America is always better at the little things - take Japan or Germany for civil engineering but as a whole the USA has a ton going for it and it's gonna get better.

Yeah, I know, you're completely right, I likewise remind myself of that occasionally.
