The thrust is no longer for "change" or "progress" or "revolution," but merely to escape, to live on the far perimeter of a world that might have been.
zootopia equated prey fearing predators (which is biologically sensible and logical) to white people fearing racial minorities and makes a ham-fisted attempt to feel a little like predators are poc... specifically black men. especially given the "oh, so there's a them now?" narrative. which is really just... tone deaf, since black people have been said to be more aggressive, more animalistic, and otherwise dehumanized in order to make it okay to oppress and hurt them.
so yeah, it's just a Very Bad Concept as far as trying to make a socio-political statement, and i was really cringing at that despite seeing it in theaters.
also, there are reptiles and amphibians and birds and even fish in sing, so that's nice to see.
plus, buster moon is gay and i love him.
edit: plus just... honestly the soundtrack alone is worth it.
+++im gay for the dancing tiger,,,,,,,,,,
but i get u about the trampled themes
i havent seen sing but ive been curious,,,,,
Sing was ok but I really dislike singing(etc) competitions, and they didn't spend enough time with any of the main cast. They should have interacted with each other more and had more time to develop, instead they feel only half completed.
Also they made the Koala not a complete fucking douche bag which is INACCURATE TO REAL KOALAS. THE LITTLE BASTARDS ARE ALWAYS ANGRY. Points to the rarer furry animals. they cool.
Basically I feel Zootopia is a tighter movie, SING should have been all about the characters but didn't spend enough time with them. I have a bias in that I don't like competitions as a trope or as a... real... thing.
Both are fine.
i'm glad to see other studios stepping up to fill the animation void though. if you haven't watched the stop-motion stuff from laika, i'd HIGHLY recommend it.
as far as the singing thing... i'm a sucker for fun musical performance stuff (despite disliking competitions of that sort in real life), so that's where we probably differ a bit. i felt that the character development was actually pretty good, given the limited time we got to meet them. we learned enough about each character to like and sympathize with them.
although, i think me not minding that also has a lot to do with my adhd because i love fast-paced films others often feel are rushed or half-thought-through. other examples are rat race, best in show, and smokin' aces. the last one has abysmal reviews for being too confusing and convoluted, but it's one of my favorite films. i love when i have to rewatch something several times to follow every nuance... so it could totally be me!
LISTEN THOUGH DON'T COME FOR BUSTER I'M LOVE HIM HE'S THE EXCEPTION but real life koalas are totally dicks yes.
as for good furry flicks, if you've not seen rango, i'd give that one a shot too. it's a little... weird. but the character designs are just. so good.
I tend to enjoy slower movies more, ones that take their fucking time to meander around.
I thought space oddity was the perfect pace, if a bit fast.
I didnt mind sing, it was good fun. but i totally see where youre coming from woth zootopias missed message. I couldnt really put my finger on it when seeing it but you put it into words perfectly.
