Reference sheets advice

General
Since I have zero (decent) reference sheets for the characters I use most, I really want to make some, but I get so burnt out every time I get about halfway through and I don't really know what I'm doing.
I'm looking for advice from fellow artists or those experienced working with artists creating reference sheets; is there a most effective method or steps you usually take? How do you prevent the sheet from looking too busy? And most of all, how polished do they usually need to look?
I know most of this is pretty subjective, but I honestly feel like there's some reference sheet culture I just completely missed out on and I don't know what to expect LOL
Maybe it's not as big of a deal and I'm expecting rules that don't exist, but it's honestly the thing I dread most but something I need to do very much.

Admittedly, I'm still new at this myself, but I haven't received any complaints (except from one person about the colors, but that was more of a personal thing)
