Maybe this is obvious to some, maybe some have doubts about this like me so, here. I finally had to start this journal to actually talk with people.
Is it okay to post commissioned work as paid posts on Patreon? Beginners with Patreon might just get 1$ for that, noone would make a problem about it. But consider an artist who have 200+ patrons - they might get twice the money from that post than the commissioner payed for their work. So it can be that 200 other people will get a full resolution image for 1$ while the commissioner payed, say 100$, basicly for the same thing, just with their character.
I remember comming across an artist who had it in their terms of service, it was something like - I reserve the right to make prints and merchandise of the commissioned works. So basically the artist owns the art unless the commissioner payed some stated amount of money to kinda have a licence on that art.
What do you think? Is that okay or is that being greedy and tricking people? How would you feel if the artist continued making money on your commissioned characters?
I think I will be introducing in the future a form for every commissioner to fill in, whether they agree on this or not. I think it depends on the person and the form of work too(like a traditional piece exist in an original form which you can buy, with digital everything is just a copy). From my experience it turns out some people dont mind and other treat their characters very personally and want to keep the works for themselves, and they have all rights to do so, after all they payed for it. This is not commercial work.
Still, what do you think, whether you're an artist, a commissioner or both or none, how would you treat such situation.

I suppose most people do alternate versions by undressing the characters or something :P, is that what you mean?
Thank you for the comment, I must know what people feel :D. I have a different perspective, sometimes I fail to see what people don't like.
My biggest problem is when people attempt to use Patreon as a pay wall. Like sexyfur.com is,but they are a site that hosts dozens of artists and is not just a single artist. And sexyfur functions more like Playboy,so in that context it works, but when it comes to individuals using Patreon to pay wall everything including commissions, then it becomes more of a money grab than a means to improve oneself and still have support.
Personally I dislike profiting from other people's stuff, be it characters, or random textures from google images. I wouldn't sell prints containing such things most of the time. Patreon is different, and would depend on the nature of the commission I guess. The owners of the characters should probably have their name placed on the full res image, for good measure.
Thanks for the comment.
Dzięki za komentarz <3
The artist who drew the piece has the rights to that piece, which means they are allowed to reproduce / sell copies that piece as they see fit.
The person who the piece was for has a license to it. They can display it... but not make money off it.
Anecdotally, I commissioned an artist last year who offered the option for the rights to the picture, but I didn't inquire how much they were. Additionally, they also don't do prints of personal characters unless the commissioner granted them permission to do so.
Basically, it would likely be covered in the ToS / contract the artist puts out.

Slightly off topic... I'm not fond of the 'patreons get access to alternate versions'... which I see as double-dipping.
For me alternate versions are "lesser" versions. Like in digital working on some element which would be discarded in the final version because it didn't really worked out like artist imagined it.

A very large majority of them do exactly that... even if it's commissioned. Only one I know of defines alternate as alternate outfits... which makes sense, but again... the above still applies, and why the assumed permanent exclusivity...
