Nazis were German. That's one.
They had a giant war machine that destroyed half of my country (I'm Polish), levelled Warsaw - the capitol - to the ground, killed 6 millions of Jews and a lot of Europe's population, leaving the entire continent in shambles.

German here. The Nazi movement didn't just pop up overnight and suddenly millions of people were dead. It had a beginning, and it seemed downright pathetic and unrealistic at that time to many. The people doing that shit in the US are deliberately recalling the look, feel and sentiment of the early Nazi movement. :-/ I think if there's anybody you can toss that word at, they're a good candidate.

One of the groups on Saturday was literally calling themselves the National Socialist Movement. The rally as a whole waved swastikas and chanted Nazi slogans.

Let's be honest though, and with good reason (which I'll get to, so keep reading): There were no Nazis in Charlottesville. There were gormless psychopathic assholes with a very poor grasp of history, but there were no actual Nazis. This is an important distinction, because to call them "Nazis" lends them a sinister legitimacy — a false gravitas which they don't deserve. They know nothing about Nazism but its most basic symbology. If they understood it then they'd know that by definition they, as Americans, cannot be Nazis. They have appropriated a history not their own to feel and project a sense of power which they would not actually possess even if their nationality qualified them for it. They're children trying to wear the shoes of someone else's father.

Good post, this is something I can agree with in most parts. I always thought the term Neo-Nazi is useful to make that distinction. Then again, that is just another kind of Nazi, just more primitive. And about the not deserving the gravitas... hm, yes and no. I think it depends in part on the viewpoint. Personally, I've never seen it as lending a mantle of importance so much as calling people out as something that's universally despised, which makes it clear that what they're trying to do is unacceptable. Which I think needs to be done. The part where those guys seem ignorant and self-importance is obvious enough, I think. I'm also aware that these people are probably (thankfully) very few and getting disproportional media attention, which in turn may win them new sympathizers. But waiting it out silently and calmly is too risky, also a modern, humanistic society should absolutely step up and show these guys that they're not wanted. But I don't think that was your point, so sorry for going off track.

Maybe the reason why people support Trump is because they're not well treated by the left. Especially since left-wing violence is disproportionately higher than right-wing violence. Trump called out both sides in the violence which is something very bipartisan that Obama and Hillary never did.

I don't have much sympathy for people who, because their feelings have been hurt by the left, vote for a corrupt, narcissistic idiot who's manifestly unsuited and unfit for the presidency, and who made no secret of courting xenophobes and white supremacists throughout his campaign.

Also, left-wing violence in the US is not, by any statistic I've seen, anywhere near the level of right-wing violence.

Antifa's violence doesn't really get media coverage because it's often "morally justified" as a counter measure against a more deplorable racist demonstration. Conservative talking heads are quick to grasp at straws and point out the hypocrisy in blaming all of the violence on the right-wing side as a result, which is where Trump is coming from with his "both sides" defensive posturing.

But no Antifa member killed anyone in Charlottesville. There were scuffles between antifa members and the neo-nazi demonstrators that did become violent though. The girl who was killed was not an Antifa member, but a peaceful counter protestor who openly feared the violence before attending the rally and worried about her safety, but still went.

So there's back and forth between brushing antifa's violence under the rug because it wasn't nearly as bad as the murder, and people who want to say "no, see violence happened from both sides!" without putting things into context.

And then there's the rest of this country who are rational thinkers who can objectively look at this and say we are not blakc and white and we will not be boxed into only two categories, left and right, and we will not affiliate ourselves who either violent group for political or personal gain, but instead reject violent individuals who pretend to act on the behalf of a greater number of people.

There was no "both sides" there that day. This was a straight up murder, and Trumo is too much of a coward to alienate his voter base by calling a spade a spade.

But antifa and neo-nazis both really need to stop being used as representative of the whole political spectrum they ally themselves with, because I don't know very many that support beating up innocent people regardless of their belief systems.

I'd be curious what statistic you can show me about right-wing violence being higher. Back in 2016 Leftists were constantly attacking Trump supporters at rallies and even getting arrested for it. The political Right in this country are always under threat of being profiled by the IRS, getting violently assaulted, getting their political donation info dumped online so leftists can vandalize their house and car. Not to mention being called "racist/Nazi/biggot" without evidence.

Trump is largely continuing Obama's wars and military deployments (US soldiers are deployed in over 130 countries) and Obama continued Bushes. There is a continuity between all three of them. The rich get richer, the police get more powerful, and the wars continue.
