I'd say add a cover letter explaining the situation, letting them know that you need money to help pay off your mother's debt (And if there's a lot that still needs to be paid off, emphasize that, stating that because of that, the job would be long-term). Also add to the cover letter that you would grab a job that pays more if it weren't for the fact that you're an artist for commission, and that a full-time job would get in the way of that. All of that should be satisfactory to ease overqualification concerns.
