You would think that Dragoneer and IMVU could figure out how to implement a bloody name change system already. It ain't rocket science.

<nerd>My guess is that either the filesystem or the database has entries that refer to your human-readable username, rather than your numeric user ID. With that system, if you want to change your human-readable username, the database for the entire site has to be checked for references to the old username, and you have to do some tricks not to break old direct links. That is possible to do, but computationally expensive.

Sites that let you change your user name more often probably key everything to your numeric user ID. Then, there's just one more database table that tells you that user 123456 is named Joe. If Joe wants to change his name to Joseph, all you have to do is update that one table to change Joe to Joseph (which takes a few milliseconds), and everything else still works like it did before.

They can fix the table design. Start converting everything prior to a certain date over, then they take a day or two outage (we're used to it by now) and convert the last remaining week or so of data and then go live on the new system.

If this is true, this shows just how bad Yak's DB design was in the first place. Yikes! Best just to have a project to get this fixed so they don't need to beg for 20 grand of hardware to deal with lagging performance again because I don't think IMVU will give it to them.
