does anyone know how multi-character ychs work?

i want to try making some ws themed ychs with mutliple characters, but the whole concept is kind of confusing to me. is it the same person buying both slots? maybe someone and their friend? what if its two strangers? idk if anyone can explain it to me that would be nice ;;
And on most YCHs it's going to be two strangers! Most people are fine with that! :P
