1987: Early Furry Tendencies

General
30 years ago, in 1987, I was 16. And I transformation was taking place.
I started to take a strong interest in animated cartoons and cartoon animals.
Not sexually, but I wanted to watch them, I wanted to be with them. I wanted to BE one.
I already had an interest in the Catillac cats. A segment on "Heathcliff", These totally rad cats had a rockin' theme song and they lived in a junkyard!

I watched them everyday after school.
And the Gummi Bears.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97QkO7nAn68
And most definitely , Chester Cheetah... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zMnqWsffbw
This cool dude lost his cool when he saw his favorite snack often with over the top slapstick comedy results.
It is why Wilson T. Longtail is inspired by him.
But in 1987 my furry tendencies intensified with this show:

Karate Kat was an obscure show and a segment on "the Comic Strip" (syndicated) . I got up at 7am on Saturdays just to watch him. I think I wanted to kiss him???
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuDSDtgEoAU
The theme song still resonates in my head, even tho the volume was down low so no one would know I was watching cartoons.
And OOOOHHH his floofy hair and the way he kicks his paw into the camera! *Swoon*
I think KK and CC were my earliest furry crushes.
And My Pet Monster..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3WPXzLDX8g
A cartoon about a plush that comes to life. This really did something to me. I love the way they hug at the end.
The highlight of my Saturday mornings was The Bugs Bunny and Tweety show....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veaDEdVZryA
Those toons dancing in tuxedos with no pants and their big paws,,, followed by 1 hour of the classics.
I was a confused young man with these attractions to cartoon animals.
So YES it was right around 30 years ago I became a FURRY. But things REALLY took off in 1988 with a Rabbit named Roger. But that is a story for another time.

Deep down inside, I haven't grown up either...
To borrow from Michael Arthur's excellent essay, You Can't Get Inside, "Millions of children watch Disney’s Robin Hood and go on with their lives, while for others… there’s a kind of lightning bolt that digs into the pit of you and generates a current throughout your whole life."
I don't think I really became a Furry from watching Cartoons it might have helped A LOT, but I still believe I could've been one from the time when I was a smol bab lol I know when I was in Middle-school I was into Nightcore and Techno. That is when I had found a Furry Rave music video which is just a slideshow with of Furries at raves to some great music LOL From then on I was a Furry even though I wasn't really active in a community online, but then High-school hit and I dove right into this big fuzzy multi-colored pile like it was a pile of leaves.
Here is a link to a Furry Rave Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G2KJQgReaI
And with watching those slideshow videos I stumbled upon Furry Con videos and I spent lots of my time watching them and drawing characters. ^3^
Thank You for Reading.

Growing up, I always preferred shows with anthro animals over live action with people. Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Looney Tunes, Tiny Toon Adventures, Rocko's Modern Life, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
I've been a big Sonic fan since I was 7 in 1995, which eventually led me to the furry fandom in 2006.
For myself, it was, of course:
Scooby Doo
Yabbad Doo
Dynomutt
Bumblion from The Wuzzles
And OH so glad you brought up Karate Kat! I loved Cat Gut on that one!
For every show I watched with human characters (Centurions, Herculoids, Highlander, etc.), there were more I watched with animal characters, and those were usually the most fun for me (Animaniacs, Sonic the Hedghehog, Swat Kats, Earthworm Jim--I loved his little sidekick Peter Puppy-- Ninja Turtles, and a truckload of classic Disney and Warner Bros.). Farmers, hunters or property developers would get humiliated in hilarious ways, and all the animals would cheer and celebrate. They also smiled and cracked more jokes in those shoes.
Ok i just red that the comic came out in 1991, so i must have been 9, but I got obsessed with sonic. Something about this cute sassy blue hedgehog made me feel really weird, I wanted to be friends with him. I oppressed that feeling for a while because I knew it was weird.
Then I got obsessed with Eek the cat, A really nice chubby cat that would just get beat up and abused the entire episode.
The final straw for turning me furry was Wendel T. Wolf from Tazmania. I didn't watch tazmania that much, but I caught one episode at the tail end (pun) and Wendell T. Wolf was yelling at Taz for squeezing tooth paste out of the tube wrong. Something about this character broke my brain - Cute toony, neurotic. I tried to draw him over and over (really badly). That started me drawing cartoon characters. After that I started making up character and such.
It even has film night!
