I would personally think of it as how many people know your name, or character. Like, if half the community knows or at least recognizes you, you're a popufur.

I think it usually goes by how recognizable your character/suit is. I mean there are artists who are extremely popular, but aren't known by their face or suit, so I think it typically goes by the character or suit - something that people visually see in the fandom. With suits you can be seen/known by your youtube videos, dancing, interaction with the public. I associate a popufur by their suit, but that's just me.

I consider a popufur being on the top 10% of popular and recognizable users/characters. So it's about having a relevant percentage of the population (in this case FA user base) be able to go "Hey, I know that furry" when they see your name or character around the site.

Since it's just the top ten percent of "popular" you need to know how to define popular first. :3 If I was to give it a definite ratio I'd say that it's when the ammount of people that recognizes you is higher than the ammount of people you recognize.

It's a celebrity like status among furries I think, where a large number of furries recognize you.

That said, a lot of people throw it around as some sort of insult so some times it might just be because you're to some degree more popular than someone else who is jealous.

I guess that depends on the context. There is some times a high school like social competition going on that probably isn't very healthy for the jealous or often popular person but if you're staying away from toxic friendships and being true to yourself you should be able to avoid this unhealthiness.

Popufur comes from popular furry if I remember right. So, I always have been thinking it was someone who is popular. Either by followers, recognition or whatever made the person popular.

Popufur people are those who accuse other popular community members of rape because they didn't get free art at a convention. They're Huffington Post thots that dish out death threats against people who can think for themselves and have opinions they don't like. They're niche kink artists who randomly start spouting hate speech or shit. Popufur people are attention whores, that surround themselves with attention-hungry drama whores that will rise up like a retarded legion of the undead to maul anything that threatens to take a blowtorch to the delicate little delusional snowglobe they live in by using ad hominem flaming and baiting tactics because they know that when the mods get involved their shit-studded angel will defend them, by deleting their nasty comments and sparing them the horror of being shit on when they decide to start throwing threats at people who dare to not idolize the same thing they do.

when you're recognized for your species, you know you hit popufur. You're getting there, or pretty much there. Like think when people think Otter, Fudge the Otter comes to mind right away, as you come across more people, if you get to that point where people will say you're name as some of the Otters they know of, that's pretty much it, you're popufur. Ofc there are different scales to it and like being a celebrity, not everyone will know who you are but doesn't stop you from being a celebrity/popufur despite that.
