I need recommendations on music, audiobooks and podcasts
8 years ago
As the title already says, you can imagine why. :)
I'm in "caveman-mode" which means I'm fully immersed in the production of Haunter of Dreams. I'm close to 20 pages completed, the lineart for all pages is fully completed also. When I worked on Myre, I had a vast array of audiobooks, podcasts and great music to listen to when I was in the zone of painting. The amount of information I put in my head during that time is immense but I currently ran out of ideas or good recommendations for audiostuff that I could listen to while I paint this comic.
So, if you have something you want to recommend to me, I'm all ears! I love podcasts, I got an Audible account and Spotify as well.
Topics that interest me in regards for audiobooks and podcasts:
Science
History (Yeah, I'm already through all of Hardcore History twice already. Haha)
Drama
Horror/Suspense
Sci-Fi
Fantasy
Documentary/ Real stories
Comedy
My taste in music is quite wide ranging, so you can shoot me anything and I'll absorb it.
Except for Pop. :)
ALSO: Christmas is just around the corner! If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you probably saw my Myre gift wrapping paper design. I will arrange for a Christmas sale in my print store as well as adding new things to the Myre store in the next few days! I will keep you updated here as well.
I'm sorry for not being around here so often. I wish I could post more art but all I currently got are single frame shots of Haunter of Dreams and random worldbuilding scribbles. All of which I think wouldn't justify a full gallery upload. That's why I use social media at times to shoot out some images whenever I can.
You can ask me anything! If you have questions regarding myself or Myre, shoot them to me. :)
My Twitter: https://twitter.com/alectorfencer?
My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alectorfencer/
Thanks so much for your ideas and recommendations!
Love!

"GUNSHIP" is also very good, if you like synthwave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfxDIyYU9nM
Lots of really good condensed science content, and extremely funny people, you don't have to watch it, but this is what I put on in the background a lot of the time.
For music, here is a giant playlist of music that is likely both familiar and new: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?li.....TZgYCmc8FcK4_r
Hard to Be a God by Arkady Strugatsky, Boris Strugatsky
music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E52rxz2sjRs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oHkmHW60nY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QlGgRBKjLE
Critical Role, if you like tabletop RPGs. It's a bunch of professional voice actors playing a very long and involved campaign with a whole lot of character development:
Playlist link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?li.....AC8XmqzW38Ivbk
Hundreds of hours long.
Family Portrait
Wrapped in Piano Strings
Third Family Portrait
Baptisms
Bond - Orchestral pieces (often classics) set to EDM/pop beats. A lot of it is a little too sugary/poppy for me, but they have a few pieces that are mellow enough to be very enjoyable.
Kismet
Sahara
Hymn
Beats Antique - Flavor-rich global fusion, with tons of arabesque/eastern influence. Delicious flavor, amazing syncopation, glitchy, crunchy texture.
Scratch Tail
Beauty Beats
Tabla Toy
Sweet Demure
Thomas Bergersen / Two Steps From Hell - Frisson-packed orchestral work, usually formatted for film trailers. If you can hear past the commercialism, or if you're a sucker for a good climax, there's some really tasty stuff to be found.
Starvation
Fearless
Creation of Earth
Swiss Army Man OST - Absurd, stupid, beautiful music from an absurd, stupid, beautiful movie. Absolutely stunning, if you don't take it seriously.
Medley
Jon Hopkins - Gritty, heavily-textured semi-ambient IDM. Very difficult to describe, but timeless, beautiful, and intense.
Vessel
Light Through The Veins
The Low Places
They have some of the most beautiful music for sure!
(I need to check out all the rest of these recommendations as well)
I'm so glad I decided to look into them. I think we've all heard Welcome Home on the radio once or twice, but the rest of their work is so incredibly different and incredible. The Family Tree trilogy is fucking insane. I need more.
The Family Tree trilogy is a fav of mine as well! (Got a book explaining the history of the songs and such, with cool photos throughout that I really need to finish reading) Its all so well-thought out!
Have you listened to any of Ben Copper's Electric President albums btw? A bit of a different sound, but still amazing quality!
Also, LOVE his side project, Clone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K25PIXD94ZM (Has 6 parts I believe)
But yeah. I'm always on the lookout for more stuff from him!
And yeah, you should definitely check out EP whenever you have time!
Joe Rogan has s lot of comedians on his podcast and some sciencey types as well.
V.
As for music, I'll take the opportunity to throw out some friends of mine. Thera, Away With My Weakness, Divides (The album Brookentooth) There is a Divides from the UK who is pretty good too, Binary Code if you like heavier or more progressive music, All Human or Orbs for something softer but different, Hypno5e or A Backwards Glance On A Travel Road if you want something that's a bit more unusual. Other then some of those guys, Some bigger ones that are good are Plini, The Fine Constant or Animals As Leaders if you want some sweet instrumental guitar magic to think to while you create, Johari is cool if you like prog metal. Again, may be spelling the name wrong, But Michael Hromek has been my jam for some sweet acoustic Celtic guitar stuff. And Serj Tankian's Orca Symphony, Puscifur if you are a fan of Tool or A Perfect Circle. Mute The Saint, Skyharbor, Wovenwar, TesseracT, Niyaz or Azam Ali, C418 is good for chilling out, And Acrassicauda is just inspiring and tragic at the same time, Watch Heavy Metal In Bagdad for that story.

Audiobooks of interest might be the Saxon chronicles from Bernard Cromwell (not actually where to get the audiobook nowadays , been almost a decade since i listened to them, i assume it's on audible, but here's the wiki page at least!) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saxon_Stories
and that's about it as far as stuff that wasn't named yet.
http://www.maximumfun.org/shows/adventure-zone Funny DnD
http://www.earwolf.com/show/how-did-this-get-made/ Talking about bad movies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc1-0NqjzSo
(Beautifully shot movie as well)
But love it so far! And I hear it just keeps getting better :D
(I get into things late, I know) lol
It's about microbes and their incredible impact on life
Music
Electro:
The Knife (Silent Shout album)
Iglooghost (Neo Wax Bloom. So fucking good; I seriously can't put this one down)
Hip-hop:
Frank Ocean (blond or Channel Orange, both are great)
Big K.R.I.T.'s new album
Janelle Monae (the Archandroid is one of the best albums ever made, absolutely stunning)
Rock:
King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard (Nonagon Infinity. Super high octane and energizing. If the movie Mad max had an album that embodied its mood itd be this album)
Weird druid mood soundtrack:
Fever Ray (self titled album)
Misc:
Loveless, by My bloody Valentine. Classic shoegaze.
Uyai, by Ibibio Sound Machine. Really upbeat afropop.
If you are i might suggest the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. http://hurog.com/books/
as well as the Alpha omega series.
Have a great day
Misha
Du könntest dir die "CastBox" App runter laden. Haufenweise Podcasts aus allen Themengebieten. Von Comedy bis Wissenschaft.
Mein Favorit sind die "Sternengeschichten". Erklärt toll wie unser Universum funktioniert :3
Liars' album from a few years ago, Mess, is really great - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAx.....COZMmVKkzjdR1I
And how about Osi and the Jupiter's Hall of the Wolf for something a little more subdued - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlxlRkW67q8
It's about the French revolution and gypsies and magic. I used to listen to it when commuting to my uni.
Fantasy!? Hawk and Fisher series from Simon R. Green
Dan Terminus- Synth -The Wrath of Code(2015), Automated Refrains (2017), Stratospheric Canon Symphony(2014)
Dance With The Dead- Synth- Near Dark (2014), B-Sides: Volume 1(2016), Out Of Body(2013)
Carpenter Brut- Synth- Trilogy(2015)
Janelle Monáe- (can't find album videos, but individual songs area all over the place) - TightRope, Dance Apocalyptic, Dance or Die, Faster, 57821
Do audible searches for:
Belgariad (The first 5 book series)
Malloreon (The second five book series sequels)
They're an amazing set of ten books that I listen to time and time again.
For metal, I would highly, highly recommend Mastodon (they're a heavy metal band with a very wide range of sounds, so it would be difficult to explain them), Red Fang is another heavy metal band (their music is usually made up of sludgy guitar riffs, and their singer never uses death growls or anything that a lot of people hate, their vocals are pretty clean, other than the fact that his voice just sounds raspy.
Some more of my favorite bands that can be considered"metal" are KoRn (they're my favorite band in the world. A lot of their music includes a lot of funk elements, especially with their bass, their music tends to also include a lit of scat vocalization, like in jazz. Their first album was pretty dark and very heavy, and their second and third albums sounded a lot more like hip-hop.
For grunge, my favorite bands in that genre are Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Audioslave (audioslave isn't really grunge, but ill list them here anyways. Audioslave is, in my opinion, the perfect balance between raw intensity and extreme mellowness. Their guitar riffs are beautiful)
I'm running low on time, so unfortunately I can't list info on all of them but I hope I was helpful.
The Beach Bears Story
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11432986/
Over 200 chapters and 24 hours of music and drama. PG rated.
- Vivaldi (La Folia and other things): https://open.spotify.com/album/6YSG.....TbFQH6gWD7c7Mu
- Jordi Savall and others (the first one is my favourite!): https://open.spotify.com/album/7g60.....TlezLzn3I5dVUE
- Genuine Swedish folk music: https://open.spotify.com/album/07nu.....8mi4WwJjxmIuP8
- Mozart Requiem, my all time favourite classical piece: https://open.spotify.com/album/7hhe.....NzQ46ngrBCSeso
For audiobooks, I really recommend Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy! It's a very dark and gritty type of fantasy story.
It's damn hard to find good music for me :(
Guys, any recommendations how to find music? I'm really tired of mine.
What sort of music do you enjoy? I personally have a ridiculously wide library of favorites of often not universally known artists.. so yeah *laugh*
Usually stuff I like is "Indie rock" but according to wiki it's quite wide genre. I'll list some:
- The Lovett
- Morning after girls
- Yoav
- Darren Korb
- Daughter
- Beecake
Fantasy
* Dresden Files. A private investigator in Chicago who is also a wizard. Very funny and well written. Really takes off on the third book.
* Age of Fire series. A series about dragons from the perspective of the dragons and actually well written (mostly), which is a rarity. First 3 books I loved. 4th was ok. 5th was meh...
* The Gentlemen Bastards. Think of stuff like bank heists, Ocean 11, etc. But in a fantasy world.
* The Mistborn series Kind of hard to explain this one. It's a great series with a unique take on magic.
* Dragon Riders of Pern (I know it's not technically fantasy). If you like dragons, this series is a must read.
* Temeraire series. Alternative history of the Napoleonic war. Only now everyone has an airforce of sentient dragons. Also a must read for dragon lovers.
* A Song of Ice and Fire (aka the Game of Thrones series). Self explanitory. Worth reading/listening even/especially if you watch the TV show.
* His Dark Material (aka The Golden Compass series). Everyone has their own sentient spirit animal thingy. Which is a good thing, but the church thinks it's a bad thing. Not recommended if you are a Christian who isn't able to take criticism and creative liberty of Christianity/the Bible (for the record, I am Christian and enjoyed this series).
* Harry Potter. Duh.
* The Hobbit + The Lord of the Rings. Also duh.
* Inheritance series (aka Eragon series). Not particularly well written, but is enjoyable none the less. Recommended if you like dragons.
Not Fantasy
* Louis L'Amour westerns. Louis L'Amour was a leading expert on the "wild west" era and had written dozens of short stories on the era, many based on actual events. Most of which have had full audio dramatizations (e.g. different voice actors for each character, sound effects, music, etc.) Top quality stuff and I highly recommend it. I would recommend starting with his Chick Bowdrie (a Texas Ranger) series first.
* Anything by Tom Clancy.
* Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin series (aka the Master and Commander series). Follows the career of a British naval captain during the Napoleonic wars.
* Sherlock Holmes. You should know what it's about. I am surprised by how many people haven't read any of these books.
* Jurassic Park + The Lost World. One of those books that everyone knows about, but never reads.
* The Princess Bride. It really is just as funny and entertaining as the movie.
* Ender's Game. Child prodigy gets trained for commanding a fleet of space ship for defending Earth from aliens.
* Ready Player One. Soon to be a hit movie.
* The Martian. Great movie. Greater book. Very funny.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is a suspenseful story of a father and son trying to survive a world desolate from war, and cannibalism. They meet some interesting folks along their journey. It was also turned into a movie.
For music:
This is one of the songs I listen to before going to bed.
Jalan Jalan - Lotus , featured in the animated movie Dragon Hunters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfk.....1E84CD85244C5B
This song is simple yet catchy.
A remix of Wintergatan - Marble Machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vgc5PDtIii8
They're all good but my fave is Evolution - the greatest show on earth.
I don't have much by way of science, but here's Smokescale's rocketry run-down.

Should be a good range of stuff.
Most of the songs I listen to are songwriter-driven, the sort that tell stories or set mood through poetic choice as much as music, but I've got some wordless stuff if that's more your jam.
For writing inspiration, I can drown happily in Carbon Leaf, and also The Head And The Heart, the former of which writes some great lyrical-driven songs, the latter which packs astonishing levels of emotion into deceptively simple tunes.
Finally, if you're doing anything western-themed, skip inferior country artists and go straight to the source of modern cowboy sound, Corb Lund, his "Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier" and "There Are No Roads Here" songs are lovely, driving, and haunting all at once.
For a more lighthearted look at science, I recommend Holy Fucking Science (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB.....R8IrDjq8LA8YrA ) - it's a rotating cast of four people usually including Hank Green (of Vlogbrothers, Vidcon, etc.) where each of them brings a science story to amaze the other cast members enough that they say "Holy fucking science!"
RadioLab: Science and sometimes different points of view, I like it very much.

the "Kate Daniels" series by Ilona Andrews is also pretty good.
the "Dragon's Gift" series by Lindsey Hall is also goods (I recommend checking the reading order though to make sure you start at the right place. Its 15 books.)
