It's also got the benefit of basically being an alternate version of Creature from the Black Lagoon, just around the concept of the monster getting the girl at the end of the film instead of being killed off.

Yep, Del Toro had that in mind when he made this film as an homage to that older film. :)

Aye, I love the quality of the practical effects and feels that it's a massive sin most movies use cgi when the practical effects work not only shows the lighting accurately, but also has an object for the actors to look at and interact with.
