Ideally you would make a website for your portfolio, where he also advertises his business, and people usually use Wordpress to help them out with this. I can also recommend Amazon Web Services to start out since it's free up to a certain amount of traffic if it needs hosting. But for now, I'd say that if you just need to show pictures, iCloud is probably the simplest option (I think if you put them into your iPad photo album they are automatically sent to iCloud, or if not, you have to enable it), and you have them backed up as well, so that's a plus.

I almost exclusively do my art/work on an iPad now and have found Dropbox to be invaluable as far as cloud computing and transfer of files go. Coupled with Procreate software for iPad, I can do edits and translate the files seamlessly between all popular formats and varying resolutions. Hope this is helpful

I have no idea about the portfolio on the ipad except for something generic, so my guess would be something with local storage, but a cloud backup, so they can walk into a client, pull out the ipad and show them without having to worry about wifi or mobile signal and then things downloading and all that mess.

However, that said, I'd also say they should have an online portfolio because I know when I was looking for folks to help out with what I wanted to do at home, I did the majority of my searching online and I would expect to see examples of their work before I even contemplated getting them in, so I'd say at least a simple web page with something on it to entice buyers for more information, then the ipad and slick sales pitch to seal the deal.
