Flu, Knee, Target, and other words that don't go together
8 years ago
Hey there!
Sorry for being veritably absent for such a long while. I actually ended up with a job at Target! It's part time (more or less) and may or may not be seasonal depending on how I do and how many people they're hiring when the season ends. It also depends on my knee...
See, the first reason I disappeared is because I got the flu. Good ol' fashioned flu, made me sick and I didn't feel like doing much of anything. Then I transitioned right into work and have been busy ever since. It's been hard finding time to do art but this week is a light one so I hopped back on. However, last week wasn't the best. All throughout Black Friday week, my right knee was killing me. Wouldn't you know it, at the end of the week, it went out. The kind of "went out" where you couldn't put any pressure on it, and I ended up having to go to the emergency room and call in the next two days. So I'm back at work for the meantime until I can go and actually see my doctor -- I'm walking on a crutch and wearing a knee immobilizer -- but when I get to the doctor I fear he'll tell me the worst; and the worst is that I'll have to do to my right knee what I've already done to my left. I'll have to get surgery.
If I get surgery? I'll have to quit my job.
Now if I get my job, I figure I'll go balls to the wall with fursuit making -- take out a loan and go All-or-Nothing. I've been using a real pansy approach about it so far, just working on one commissioner as of yet, and he's just as broke as I am so we're really going nowhere. I also had a head of my own but it's sitting in the background now too, because I'll be using the fur I was going to use for it, on my commissioner's head. But I'll go way harder in the paint if I lose my job. There will be no brakes. Making premades, making tails, doing a free head to get the name out there, new account on FA, website, more art, everything I can. No pussyfooting if I get the option again. 6-8 hours a day just like any other job.
On one hand I'm terrified of losing my job. On the other hand, I welcome it. But either way it works out I still have a whole queue of folks that are owed art.
Getting to that! I praise you folks for your patience and humility as I stumble my way through things. I promise to get back into a steady flow of art, same as you've seen on this page in years before. There are backgrounds missing Sephs for SephrenDemon and there's a Xenokobra missing color and surely enough there are still pieces for the amazing ZacharyCoyote who is in Basics as I type. And by my honor they will all by done.
I thank you for working with me to assure I can do my best to work with you, and create the best possible pieces I can create for you all. Hopefully I will not have to go through surgery, and even if I do it will extend the number of ways I am able to interact here. Regardless, I plan to get better with balancing posts and communication on FA with my work and offline life.
Thanks for your time, and for all you do. All the best, to everyone

Well I've already done my left knee, I think my right knee is trying to tell me it's time for its surgery :') But I'll be aight, no worries. How have you been doing? You and your kyoot tiggy char <3
And I finally got to the doctor, probably gonna have to go back to physical therapy but doc wants to avoid surgery too so it's a play-by-ear kinda thing for now. Luckily it's been feeling better since I've had lighter shifts this week, but since next week is a super intense one I hope I don't put it out any worse :v
Ooh a dog! Are you checking petfinder and everything? It's a very intuitive site, and you'd be surprised with what breeds you'd find. And yeah heh, preparing for holidays on my end too -- shopping is killing me and fourth quarter retail is the worst job NA. I'm doing some Christmas art gifts though, and actually having a great amount of fun with them, so it's really surprisingly nice :P
If you do turn to fursuiting, be careful -- better to scrape by for a bit with a very small queue until you get established rather than loading up a huge one with the potential of getting behind, or getting overwhelmed. I would very, very strongly suggest doing just one or two things (and really, only one suit at a time if you really feel like you're ready for a full one -- If you havn't done one yet, I'd certainly try to get one under your belt for YOU, first before jumping into it. Otherwise you have no idea what to charge have no idea your own skill level/challenges or any examples to show, no financial plan based on knowing how much a suit costs you to build, and some very trusting person will be paying you probably too little for the time you'll be spending learning the basics) until you get a few under your belt and they're selling well -- there's no reason to take on more for the money, and then have the potential of having so much going on that you get behind. I don't mean to be discouraging, just cautioning you to avoid the pitfall of thinking you'll make it work, financially, with no basis to get so heavy into it before you know if you can even do it -- working all day every day on suits can be taxing on your body in ways, too, and it's a lot of mental and financial pressure to get through while you're working hard.
Would work give you a hiatus if you explained? Is there any kind of full-leg brace that would allow you to work after surgery, putting no pressure on your leg?
I hope all goes well for you, friend -- I just strongly caution you to take it slow on the suits!
Yeah I wasn't planning on a huge list, no worries ^^ I also don't think I'll be trying digis on the public (i.e. put them for sale) for quite a while... I have a lot of ideas about how I want to do things, but man am I scared about execution haha. I think I'm just going to start with some premades, maybe a "YCH" kinda thing even -- make a base and let someone buy the ability to have it furred, if that appeals to people as an idea. I'm doing a custom commission right now, but it's just for cost of materials and, for that obvious reason, I'm making nothing off of it. It's a very good learning experience, but besides that it just gives me an example under my belt. I have done a fullsuit before but it was basically a solid color -- it was quite sometime before discovering the furdom, and I'm sure I could do much better now anyways, with new things I've learned. I'll definitely be doing another for practice, before attempting to sell one, however.
And no, you're not discouraging at all; in fact I think you have the opposite effect. It's nice when people aren't afraid to apply criticism and advice, even when they may be "harsh" or "negative" or what have you. Real life isn't sugar coated so the advice you get shouldn't have to be sugar-coated either -- the price you pay for mistakes definitely isn't, haha.
Also, I've been known to be wrong, but I've been taking a lot of notes from a lot of makers and tutorials and of course from my own work, and I seem to have discovered that an 'average' sized fullsuit, in most cases, takes 5 yards of fur :v That's still by no means cheap but, hey, it's a number :P
Ehh, I don't know if work would have any leniency or not. This is the second second I've hired onto Target, and well, I'm not sure I'd be good for a third if I had to quit. After arthroscopic surgery (which is likely what I'd have to get) you pretty much have to be off the knee and iced for a good 5 to 7 days, at least by my surgeon's order. After that you're still unable to put full pressure, and usually still on one crutch if not both, for 4 to 6 more weeks, and ugh rehab lasted an eternity. While I'm sure rehab won't be a problem, I'm concerned that the first week, and especially the rest of the 4-6 weeks, will interfere with my work. I could still cashier during the crutch stage but I'm not really needed on cashier; I signed on this season for hardlines, which is a stocking and sorting job and requires a good amount of walking/standing. Since it's technically my job, not cashier, I could easily lose it, or at least be compromised. So, heh, I dunno.
Either way, thanks for your concern, eh? Glad to hear from you again, too. I'll try to keep myself out of trouble but hey, no promises :P
I also think I commissioned you as well?
And yup, you did ^^ I have your sketches all done, sitting in a pile of Seph's :') But heh, yeah all those emergency pieces are on my next-to-do list, no worries! Also your icon is really cute <333
Good luck with everything, man. That kinda blows with your knee and all.
