Ko-Fi Funded Art Raffles? (SURVEY, PLEASE READ!!!)
PLEASE READ, I WANT FEEDBACK ON A SURVEY/QUESTION ABOUT HOSTING ART RAFFLES!!!
Link to survey here! It is an IN DEPTH survey to see not only interest, but when the raffles should be, where they should be hosted, and what the prizes should be! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F8FFX6B
I have a VERY IMPORTANT question!!
I am highly consider starting a tradition where whatever amount of Ko-Fi tips/donations I receive after a certain date contribute to the retail value of a prize offered in a free art raffle. Resets after each Ko-Fi funded raffle.
That way people have a chance at something bigger, and the prize is "paid for" so to speak.
I think this is a really good way that both the artist gets support, and also theres am opportunity for the broad audience to get a chance at a large drawing!
Can be done monthly or annually (but tbh I rarely get Ko-fis, so probably should do it annually)! These "Ko-Fi Funded" raffles would be IN ADDITION to any art raffles I decide to do for fun on a whim. I usually host my raffles on Twitter since thats where I get most entries/activity! (so make a twitter now so you can be active on it if you intend to join any future free art raffles, I just hosted 2 c; )
I just really want to get good feedback on this, I think its a good idea, but I want to know if people are interested and think its a good idea, too.
I also have a poll on twitter:

Please let me know what you think in the comments! I want as much feedback as I can get!

"Do not host or participate in any form of gambling.
Gambling or games of chance are defined as requiring participants to pay an entry fee for a chance to win a prize but are not guaranteed to get a prize. This may include raffles, sweepstakes, or lotteries. Contests where entry is free or where all participants are guaranteed to receive a prize are permitted."
If i misunderstood then yeah gambling is forbidden almost anywhere.
Well that could work then.
Though be careful, you can't ask people joining the raffle to post a journal to advertise it (this rule was made to prevent spamming)
That's a good point! I might be sticking to hosting via twitter based on both responses as well as positive past experiences; I get most traction on there and the way retweet entries work makes it easy to enter as well as more likely to go viral and have more people enter! Though I have more dA and FA watchers that twitter followers I've gotten the most web traffic, interaction, and even commissions there in the past year with like 85-90% of my clients being from my twitter following and being easier to reach people with comm ads or raffles.
At the moment I very rarely any kofi tips or donations, I rarely do unlike some big name artists (it's a lot easier to get tips when you have way more followers or are so gosh darn popular people worship your work), and I don't always particularly get commissioned often (or if I'm in session with school I really can't work due to a heavy workload). Due to the lack of consistency I also can't do patreon, at the moment the only place someone can be like "hey I like your art here's a tip to keep doing what you do" is kofi tips because I wouldn't wanna host a patreon and in addition to getting little to no patrons also not be able to post regularly.
I figured as both as both stimulation for people to support my work as an artist (or other artists), it would be fun to take the total amount of tips and donations I've gotten on my kofi and host an art raffle with the prize equating in price to the amount of tips I've collected over time. I figured I would do those "kofi funded" raffles public for anyone to enter in addition to any other raffles I decide to do on a whim, so kofi funds trigger a special raffle so to speak (one of the survey options was big raffle public and a small raffle for known donors too as a than you). With kofi, sometimes/often people post anonymous tips there so you can't know x__x
I also figured like, most artists post and say "hey if you like my art and free raffles support me on kofi so I can do it more!" But I feel like that's vague and people don't believe or feel inclined to subscribe to that if it isn't gUARUNTEED explicitly that donations can trigger a raffle? :0 and I'd also feel like people can be like "ok the money supports the artist but what's it in for ME?" too
I've seen artists do like "buy me a coffee and get a small doodle if you leave a ref!" But the more I think about it I'm like, what's better, getting a super fast scribble for a $3 tip, or having to ask people to give $9+ For a nicer drawing, but then isn't it just like a commission and you should just advertise for those? Or would it be better that all the tips I ever get basically fund my time to do a bigger art raffle? Personally if I was a patron I'd rather do that, and have my tips and donations to an artist be a pool for a big fun event in the future than getting a teeny scribble for myself. Alternatively some people take commission PAYMENTS via kofi which is not only defeating the purpose of it being a tip/donation but also super shady to me bc I don't think you get buyer protection at all like that. I've seen people do fundraisers where they edit the way the fundraiser drawing looks (making a character fatter or buffer or whatever) but I never understood the point or appeal of that and also don't think my audience would be interested in that.
A big reason why I wanted to do a survey too (I had a poll on twitter that's getting a lot more replies than the big survey, RIP) is that it does feel in a way like a lottery, and some people don't like that (though I see tons of people on FA skirt around the rules low key), so I wanted to see what the general consensus or inclinations are.
The way I'm seeing it is that it's the artist giving back to the wider audience based on the few that chose to support them, with the tips amassed paying for the artist's time to be able to take a step away from work or school for a moment and be able to do more raffles
So far almost all the raffles I've done have just been on a whim to give to people, and I've raffled hundreds of dollars worth of work with lots of entrants (my most recently raffles prize having a $165 ish retail value) asking nothing in return, but the contrast between amount of people who say they love your work enough to get it for free vs to buy it is steep, and I don't draw too much nsfw or other content that people often get donations for as muchas some artists do x___x
I feel like it leans more similarly to the situations where an artist says "if I make $500 in commissions I'll do an art raffle!" Type thing, which, if the kofi thing looks shady, I'll probably do that instead, but also it's artist making $500 off comms for a small or unknown prize size raffle (but yes everyone gets art they buy) vs any misc tips or funds from commissioners and watchers funds a guarantee raffle and prize corresponds to how much tips were collected.
I feel like this option makes people more inclined to tip and artists more inclined to give back/do raffles more often. Of course I would do normal raffles on a whim as well in addition, it's just be nice to get a little spending money on books or supplies or food once in a while without needing to schedule huge patreon stuff to entice people in addition to both being a full time student while working on the side and trying to network to find a long term job bc freelancing for fandoms isn't what I want to do for a primary source of income after college.
So far people look interested, but I maybe should have considered asking a question in the survey around the lines of "kofi raffle, or commission money goal raffles?"
