I think this has happened to all of us at least once... My suggestion to you is invest in (not like they are so expensive), an "external hard drive". I have a little 200gb one. It plugs right into my computer via USB and you can turn it off when you aren't using it. I keep a back up of all of my art, music, ect on there as well as on my main computer. Then I made occasional (6 month) DVD back ups. That's about the best you can do I suppose. It's hard to lose everything. Last time It happened to me I broke a lot of inanimate objects.

well if you can, try to get a RAID setup, so at least one of your hdd will survive
and stay with SEAGATE and WESTERN DIGITAL brands, all others have a way higher failure rate.

no, it was formated and then windows putted back on, specialist said that 80% percent is lost until they would really start doing some weird thing with my disk but taht would also mean possible physical damages

Seagate is not very reliable either. They have the better chance at failing as well, and more likely to have a meltdown.

What happened exactly? Depending on what had occurred would actually determine if it was able to be saved before the formatting.

I buyed new motherboard, and as we all know windows needs to some files from installer CD, no? but somehow my compy didn't want to read so i called my uncle for help, he dig in there and said that he needs to reinstal windows (i am pointing here that i don't have any wisdom about system things), I said it is okay until my graphical files stay untouched. superb. Only thing is that he didn't asked me where i keep those files, becouse he asumed that i keep them gods knows where, in the end whole My documents went to devil and this is where i was storeing everything. Compy went for 3 weeks to data retrieval studio, but woman over there told me that at least 80% is so damaged that they can't get it back unless they would do some really big magic impossible with machines which tjhey have there. Dickish, really diskish >.< at home of course another prob occured, my compy can't work longer than 10 minutes becouse it crashes and i hell don't know why <( thought it was memo, so i runned with only one memo box, and fuck nothing, thought it was motherboard chipset becouse it was hot like devil's ass, but is not that either becouse even with additional cooling it still crashes, so my compy waits for another visit at service >< 4th week without my machine ...
not to mention that my mp3 player broke apart in my hand and i damn can't find guarantee anywhere >< and from all those nerves i becamed sick

Hold on, are you saying that your HD wouldn't work when you installed a new motherboard? I had the same thing happen to me, but formatting wasn't really the best answer. Using the repair program in the CD would have been the best thing for anyone to do at such moments, which is something that everyone that I've conversed with that is semi-comp literate and had some probs could have done to end all the troubles. If the repair programs didn't work, then it would have been best to have an extra drive that is already working, then you would have been able to transfer your files from one drive to the other with ease.

My point is this: even if you can't boot up the drive, it doesn't mean it's dead. There is a little trick that I found that you could do to keep your files safe from being formatted, but I've only done it with 98SE and haven't tried it on XP yet.

What do you mean by Memo? As for the crashing, your memory could be low, bad or leaking. So getting your memory checked would be advised. Also, if your processor is bad or going, that could also be the reason. The HDD's configuration could definitely be another major issue, so running Error-Checking is strongly advised.

Repairing program wasn't working like it should, guy in the service told me that i just need to puit windows CD and my compy will download whjat it needs and then will reboot again with notting touched, but it didn't worked and i asked wrong person for the help >< mustard after the dinner anyways, I wanted to make backup after system reboot but i didn't managed, and earlier i didn't thought of it... and like i sadi it is mustard after the dinner already, and i have XP

My memo can't be low or leaking becouse it's completely new, everything is new except of this damn disk ><

I didn't say you formatted it, silly. The person that handled your comp didn't think wisely when he took action.

Thanks, but i really wasn't expecting that this willl happen, preiouslly i had no problem like that, windows cd made it's work and notting was gone, but that was long time ago

As of late, many unexpected events been happening to many comps. I'm still recovering from having my comp down through most of last week.
