Apparently it's actually bringing us into line with what the rest of the world was already doing, but man does it hurt if you're a small business used to how things were previously priced.

No shit, I was shoved into shock just recently trying to mail a small paperback to France, and they wanted $24 to mail off a book that cost $2.00.

I just checked the USPS website and there is no mention of this.

They didn't put it out there prominently, but it's there. It's linked from the stamps.com blog post (which explains things in a slightly less painful font).

Great, now I wonder what it will cost what USED to cost between $3.50-$5.00 to ship overseas.

If you go to the stamps.com post, there's a table of previous cost vs. new cost, per ounce, below the part that talks about the rule change. It's... not encouraging. A 4 oz package that cost $2.91 previously will be $9.50 at the package rate.

depending on the weight, I could ship a A4/Legal letter envelope internationally for between €1.50 and €3.70... I can even send a package up to 1kg as a maxi-letter to foreign for as much as €7.00! useful to spoil you people rotten with oversugared nutella sticks. XD

I wonder how they're going to enforce this for smaller art pieces? I mean, are they going to start opening people's mail looking for artwork? A piece of art is typically not any heavier or thicker than a document.

I don't think there's any way to prevent people from lying on forms, and yeah, short of opening and inspecting every envelope, I don't know how they'd catch or enforce it.
