If you know what this is about, FAB - if not, no worries. It's not a *huge* deal, but it's something I'm passionate about and I think needs addressing.
As a Digital Artist who works on commission basis - What Elle Darby did disgusts me to my very core.
On a DAILY basis, you get people trying to get art out of you in exchange for "exposure" in my line of work, as if it's any different to running down your local corner shop and asking to have your daily grocery shop for free, on the basis that you'll tell your mate to use this specific corner shop.
People do NOT work for free, nor should they be expected to. And to be totally frank, when you have people approaching you again, and again, and again asking for freebies, it gets to a certain point where you *have* to make a dramatic public post like the Hotel in question did.
I honestly applaud the Hotel manager for taking a dive, and doing what he thought was right.
At the end of the day, we don't know how many times this type of thing has been "propositioned" of this hotel, and it *does* get to you. And especially when you consider it's not just the hotel losing money when you ask for free shit, it's the employees - Right from the cleaners who change your bed sheets daily, to the chefs in the kitchen who do their utmost to make sure your meal is of top quality standard.
It's a *real* problem in the art community, and to see it becoming a problem with Youtuber's, or to be honest just any average joe feeling like they're *owed* something just for existing... No.. Life doesn't owe you shit, you EARN your way through life.

I know it isn’t cheap to run a hotel and I applaud the owner’s stance of defending his staff and expenses.
Thank you for mentioning this, I wouldn’t have stumbled across the story without it!
Some of us have decent worth ethic ;u;
You have an advantage as well though - you can ALSO see the 'other side' of it, in regards to people asking you for 'free artz!'.
If someone's being an idiot, you should calmly and kindly explain to them why they're being an idiot, and how they could improve, and not be such an idiot in the future.
Maybe it's just because on art sites, we have that different perspective? I'm not sure. But I kinda wanna meet her and like.. explain why so many people are against her and think she's entitled.
I think maybe if someone sat her down and actually explained, she might learn. But it seems too far gone now what with these other idiots sending her death threats. That's just equally as idiotic imo.
At the very least, it did open a discussion about it! Even if she doesn't take away anything from it, others might and hopefully realize that asking for freebies has a greater effect than they originally presumed.
Then again, I wasn't aware of their history of basically being just that way long before she ever came into the picture, so that did shed some light on things, at least.
I dunno, just... whether or not it was rude (which it was) to ask for free shit like that, she DID word it very professionally and politely. I didn't get any vibe of 'I'm entitled to this' from her, I think she was just... naive? idk.
She shouldn't have asked, but she certainly could have worded her request much worse. I'm not saying the dude should have just bowed down to her or accepted her proposal but I'm saying I think he took it too far.
The fact that he half assedly blacked out her email to the point that some people could see and find it and harass her is unacceptable imo. The fact that he continued milking this and went so far as to tell her to "get a real job"
and she might be able to afford conveniences like everybody else... the fact that he banned ALL bloggers from his hotel (which how the fuck would you even know who is one if they don't make it readily apparent??) all just...
really pushed the entire thing overboard for me. Particularly the 'real job' thing.
The dude hates millenials with a passion and does the one thing I absolutely cannot stand people doing; generalizing and stereotyping the masses, assuming they all act and think the same. So honestly, he made himself look
far worse than the girl by the end of it in my opinion but again... I think I'm in the minority since all I see is people praising him. lol
Bottom line: asking for free shit is fucked, but so is judging a whole group of people based on the actions of a few!
With that in mind, I do think his *first* reaction to it was alright, but any further escalation was uncalled for.
But now seeing that that's how he seems to respond to everything I'm sort of on the fence about it.
At least in terms of art, I have the same standpoint, but in terms of this, I'm now on the fence.
I agree with you, I think the girl was naive. But I can't escape the feeling that she has to have some degree of entitlement to have even asked in the first place.
At least from my stand point, or how I would behave, I would *never* presume to get something for free, I'd never ask, I'd never think I deserved anything for free. If something is offered to me for free, I'll try and get the person offering to take *something* for it, as I don't think it's right to be handed stuff for free just as a general rule. But I suppose that's just me.
I don't ever want to take advantage, and it would never occur to me to try either.
Bottom line: asking for free shit is fucked, but so is judging a whole group of people based on the actions of a few!
^^^^^^^ THIS. So much THIS. ^^^^^^^^
I just feel horrible about it. I want to support them. I had a friend who had to beat me into submission over IM because I wanted to pay her for the art she did for my birthday. LOL. So no I totally get it!
I watched Phil's vid as well! I love his videos. Straight to the point and informal~ I hadn't heard about the escalation part before his video either which actually makes me wonder how many people don't KNOW about that part.
Seems like not many outlets are talking about the full details beyond the initial communication between those two. Leave it to most media outlets to leave out the details. :P
If my bestie does me art, I feel obliged to do her one back at least because she never lets me give her funds for it!! xD
It is worrying about the lack of detail though, you'd think considering the current climate everyone would want to be transparent - but seems not :s
