Ahah, you just put their icon on your profile and say "I AM PART OF THIS". It isn't organized at all.

Basically what fluffthesergal said. You can just put the icons on your profile page to show that you are apart of something and what not. You can watch the group too if you want. There is no real way to join a group basically. For finding them, I normally just find them through other peoples pages but you probably could try looking through the search tab on FA here to see if anything pops up.
