Usually I find the people who consider it to be an insult or offensive to be a bit... Unhinged?
I still use it anyway for the lack of a better word.

I know of an artist who hates the words "shemale" and "cuntboy" so much they block anyone who uses them. Can't remember who exactly.

I've heard of a few that take it that way, but personally never met any.

I've been screeched at for saying that term. My dad (second mom now) is a trans, and never mentioned shemale being a negative term. But I'm a white guy, so my opinion wasn't worthy, even if a more direct, first hand experience trumps their grand-standing lack of any experience. *shrug*
