Grim Dawn is a really good one. Base game has four classes that can be multi classed, and the DLC expansion added two more(along with a LOT more content, about 66% of the base game's amount)

No limits on how you can combine classes(thought some combos are much more OP than others)

You can equip pretty much anything, provided you meet the requirements of what is essentially STR for medium/heavy armor and two-
handed melee weapons, DEX for most one-handed weapons and light armor, and INT/WIS for magic items such as trinkets, rings, wands, staves, tomes, etc.

Skill trees are RIDICULOUS. Each class has it's own that you invest in as you level up, but there is what equates to a celestial tree as well where you invest points you get from fixing/cleansing shrines into constellations that provide various effects, with a majority giving augments you can apply to you class abilities. You can make a dash attack do anything from healing you, to empowering you, to summoning temporary allies, to all sorts of other effects.

Not to mention your gear can have special effects too. Like boots that cause a small quake for AoE damage whenever you hit an enemy, or a sword that randomly fires a replicating magic bolt. And some gear still has special abilities unique to the item, with a personal favorite being an early game item. And it's shitty. Literally. It's poo stained pants where you can throw a turd that explodes for poison damage. I don't use it, but I keep it as a trophy cause the item is hilarious.




And, the biggest thing of all.....TRANSMOGRIFICATION OF YOUR ITEMS CAUSE FASHION IS KEY(although the transmog system is only available if you have the expansion)

I will admit there is a complex learning curve, but it's very fun when you get the hang of it. Especially when you're killing enemies with a sword/club/thing that is literally a skeleton's middle finger. :I

I can play complex games just fine! I just want something simple now though that isnt too distracting from the main gameplay (killing stuff, progressing gear, progressing a simple skill tree etc)

It's a tad different, but Shell shocked is pretty fun! I like the visuals of it a lot haha. Also has a skill tree!

Honestly, just try different mods for D2. There's tons of stuff from minor tweaks to full overhauls, new campaigns, etc. Or you could just play D3. =3

Have done all of the above! Modded D2 is really cool and uhh well, over 300 hours into D3 if not more!

Maybe try Magicka? I haven't played it but it seems pretty focused on the action.

Or maybe try Grim Dawn or Titan Quest and just ignore all the extra stuff? I had a TQ character that only used 3 buttons and a couple passives, so simple builds are totally possible.

problem is if theres all those extra mechanics i get distracted and ultimately spend more time fucking around than actually playing the game :(

Titan Quest is basically an older version of Grim Dawn and only has multiclass specs and charms you can attach to gear. The class trees have a lot of options, but if you can focus on a simpler build you'd probably like it. It's just a lot of reading the skills first, which can be tedious. =/

Id just end up following a guide which takes that complexity out of it, which is fine, although following guides tends to slow things down a bit from the natural skill progression from a game like Diablo 2.

That said titan quest looks alright, ill have a look at it :) ittle just take me a long while to find a class/build i like because there looks to be so many.

I think you're kinda overselling how simple D2 is, you're just so used to it that it feels natural for you. =P

I dunno, if i wanna play a ranger there is an obvious choice there for D2; Amazon bow tree.
That can be said for almost everything in D2, everything is very iconic.

Except maybe the druid, if you pick druid you have no idea what you're getting into without actually looking through everything.

Torchlight and PoE were by ex Diablo devs

aside from that there are games that are based on Diablo but aren't isometric like Borderlands.

There's also Diablo 3

Mnhn! Torchlight is sorta what im looking for, maybe a bit more simple or slightly better themed. The theme / setting of torchlight never really sat well with me.
I might just try Torchlight again given i cant find anything else.
Played all of them though x3 D3 was good but ive played hundreds of hours of it
PoE is alright but the complex mechanics are too distracting, i just wanna jump in and play.

Path of Exile is a good one and it's free to play on Steam.

The side scrolling "dark souls" ,Salt and Sanctuary, has a talent tree and all that other stuff. Also has a couch co-op mode!

Otherwise i'd realy recommend the Mod Path of Diablo
It's a mod, but it has it's own launcher that installs the entire mod for you, eleminating the need
to fidget with files, it has end-game maps but is pretty vanilla D2'esque.

Baldur's Gate maybe?
