And another one bytes the dust ...

General
Last year my desktop system died, leaving me writing (and doing very limited 3D art) on my little windows 7 netbook.
Well today I was over at my brother's (celebrating a couple birthdays for this/last month), and the system rebooted itself. And now all I'm getting is the dreaded 'no boot device detected'.
While I have a backup from last week this week is on the 'missing' drive (just I should have updated my story to FA yesterday instead of waiting for tonight!)
I'm not without a way to write or access the internet, but word doesn't run worth a dang on a raspberry pi ...
More info (and maybe an update) after I tear the drive out of the netbook and see if I can make it play 'one more time' ...
Wish me luck!

FA+

(I've been running on a desktop/laptop pair for years, so it's relatively easy for me to switch one out. These days I also have a gaming/streaming unit, so three.)
I'll let it fully recharge and try it again (might even try sticking it in the freezer to see if I can make it run long enough for one last backup ...)
I'm looking at the Tinkerboard S to make a portable off grid computer system.
Looks interesting, the question of course is whether it'll run things like DAZ3D (funny, I have that old photoshop version around here somewhere.
Just stuck the netbook in the freezer to see if a bit of chill will let the drive spin just one more time. While I had done some backups last weekend the story files weren't copied (may have been 'open' at the time) so if the freeze doesn't work I'm out everything since the 2/11 update I have here and on the yehaa group.
Ask your gods, deities and animal spirits for one more good spin.

There is a USB drive you can get that has an OS on it you just have to tell the system to boot from the USB port.
Live and learn - until it kills ya ...
If you can boot from the Linux CD, you should be able to open a file explorer and inspect the files on the drive that won't boot. If your laptop has USB slots, then you can copy your most recent work to a thumb drive.
I can recommend a couple of the Linux distributions if it would help, but don't toss the ailing hard drive just yet.
I'll hang onto the drive in case a way to look at it comes up, but for now I'm just trying to move the story forward.
What I might do is load the Linux you suggest and use it as a secondary box (running off a SD card until I find a drive replacement.)
just gonna leave this here.
