Chrono Trigger

I take you out of your box with almost tender almost exaggerated care, well maybe not too exaggerated after all 23 years old almost , that's quite a lot for one of your kind.
Its all still there, instructions, maps, your box a little battered and worn, is it really that long ago I first held you, first plugged you into my SNES where you would stay for a long long time.
Are you still there, will you still come to life for me, and take me on that adventure again?.
My old SNES looks yellowed and old standing next to my new flat screen but it works and there you go, back where you belong, you click into place.
Click goes the power button and for a moment I fear you wont be there, that those 23 years really will have been too long.
Then the screen flashes on, the pendulum swings "tick-tock tick-tock" the music starts and your back my old friend.
Your back and I still love you.
I look at Steam and its heartbreaking.
I see what they did to you and I rage, the ones who should love you, should take care of you respect you, who build part of themselves on your fame and success.
They only see the money in you but not the beauty.
They made you ugly and wrecked, they betrayed you and all the people who worked so hard to create you, they betrayed all your friends who like me gave you a special place in their heart,
And I ask everyone, do not reward them for that.
Please don't buy Chrono Trigger on steam...

All that's really wrong with it that they charge more for it than they do the mobile version... Which the Steam version is just a port of. Just like the Steam version of every other Square SNES RPG, which makes me wonder why anyone expected anything different here.
The majority of the hate has centered on it being ugly, not simply that it's just a port of the mobile version. I have played it, and while it's not ideal, there is nothing wrong with it as it was released. Or to be more accurate, nothing is wrong with it that justifies the amount of hate it's getting.
Now, it's worth noting that all this complaining MIGHT lead to something better - the game's original director is using the complaints, plus his clout with Square, as a springboard to push for an actual remaster to be made. But don't get your hopes up for it - such a project will have the same niche market as this release did, so it's highly unlikely it will happen.
as instance as all uses scanlines when a blur effect would done the job much better and represent the game better as most crt tvs dint have those lines (worked on it but dint display it) so images was softer looking due to it
some of the new high rez ports i seen of games actually ruins some old 3d titels as they look with super crisp grafics more barren and sterile as the low rezolution in a game like shadow of colossus caused a artefakt to be created in grass making it look more alive, then ps3 port its to crisp and looks bad due to it.
Is that really the argument you want to go with? It's getting hate because it's one of the best and most well loved JRPGs in gaming history and it deserved better for its PC release than a limited time cheap port from the mobile version where you use your mouse to "tap" the screen. It deserved better than the forced and non-removable awful filter put on top. It deserved better than the utter lack of resolution options or just options in general.
When a pirated ROM of the game running on ZSNES gives the gamer a better experience than the paid-for version, you've screwed up completely.
Just because it's not what you wanted doesn't mean it deserves to be shat all over like this. There is, quite simply, not enough money in the retro gaming market to justify what you wanted out of it(Nintendo cheaped out BIG TIME in the NES and SNES Classics to make sure they'd still make money). CT is my all-time favorite JRPG but I'm not gonna get all butthurt because Square didn't want to spend money there was a slim chance of making back.
The game is it is tickles my nostalgia bone more than sufficiently. Just plug in a gamepad and enjoy the memories.
And I very much doubt Chrono Trigger of all things wouldn't make enough money by porting the original properly onto Steam. Hell, if they'd just bundled the ROM with an emulator and charged £5-10 for it it would have been a better product.
No, Chrono Trigger is not any more likely than anything else to make money with a "proper" port. IF it was, they'd have done it.
The thing with retro gaming is that the people who could really make that niche of the market rain money...don't want to. They insist the only way to play is on the original system - no emulators, no rereleases, not even a NES or SNES Classic. The classic gaming niche is EXTREMELY tiny, and only about half of it is actually willing to buy the games no matter what sort of effort is put into the port
Mobile ports get made because the "nothing can beat a tablet or smartphone" idiots see something like that and shit their pants in amazement over such "interesting and innovative" games. The result is a version of the game that can be easily ported to the PC, so they do it to make a few extra bucks. It's the only reason this stuff happens at all.
Also, it doesn't need to be big money, just needs to make a profit. And considering they were charging £15 for a 20 year old game, I think they'd come out alright.
That's a common misconception. It doesn't simply need to make money, it needs to make enough money that it's worth more than doing something else. Heck, it needs to make enough that it's worth more than doing 'nothing' with the money you would have spent and just leaving it in a relatively liquid investment¹.
Any time you start something in business to make money, you have to consider the opportunity cost of not being able to do something else.
1: And not just edge that out either, low-risk liquid investments give you a good amount of value in being flexible.
However it did spark interest in whatever their doing with ff7 now.
In fact until the remake was announced their stance was "We're not doing it because it's an unwinnable situation", something I fully agreed with them on. But then they went and did it anyway
Its a port of the mobile version, and its a mess.
No, the game's not any kind of ideal port(thus why I'll wait until it's prices comparatively to the mobile release before buying), but the hate is extremely overblown.
It's people like this who made EA into such a huge company, because 'Eh, who cares, right? Just gimme games; I don't care HOW you give them to me!'
Just taking everything that gaming companies thrw at you, then throwing them money in return tells them you don't really care what they throw at you... as as you react that way, they stop even trying to make a good port ot remaster or new game. Instead you get bad ot horrible ports like this, or TONS of remasters (because gods forbid spending money on something new! That rewuires thinking and work!) or super shitty game concepts like the lootbox heavy game design behind Battlefield 2.
I appreciate that the business model says games have to turn a profit. But why do people buy games in the first place? To be dissappointed? To grumble and feel stress and annoyance, then never play the game again? To feed their paychecks into some game devs pockets? No. They play games to have an experience. To have fun. To feel challenged in a good way. To be transported from their shitty lives into another persona for a short while, and explore a world full of amazing sights, loveable characters, and wonderous powers. No one WANTS to have to talk about all this bullshit dealing with appearances and ports and the desecration of beloved games of the past. All they want is something new and enjoyable, like that recent Zelda game, or the new Monster Hunter, or the one with the robotic wildlife.
Every time someone takes the stance that it's perfectly normal and expected for devs and gaming companies to release crap games, those companies lower the bar a bit more, and wait for people to think THAT is all you can expect from them... and then they lower it a bit more. Sure sometimes they go too far, but they fall back *just* enough to make people think they've learned their lesson, then go right back to trying for the bare bones of what even qualifies as a game and still charge you full price for it AND put in things you need to buy, like the new Metal Gear Survive game, which takes a franchise (Metal Gear) smushes it together with a game play type (survival horror with zombies) and then CHARGES YOU $10 JUST TO HAVE A SECOND SAVE SLOT. This is NOT ok, and no one should see stuff like this happening and just shurg and say 'What else can you expect?'. That's what they WANT you to do, so they can try cutting things back even more next time.
I remember the original Chrono Trigger. It was one of my favorite games of all time, and if they were going to port it to the PC, it should have gotten the treatment that it deserves. If they instead ported a fuckin CELL PNONE GAME to a PC platform and are only keeping it up for a short time, guess what? They're testing the waters to see if they can do that again and make money. Anyone who is buying that game on Steam is telling them 'Why yes... I DO want to play games no more sophisticated than a cell phone game on my PC! Here, take my money!'. They're also encouraging the game companies to not even try harder, since.... why bother? We can get money from the stupid masses for anything. Look at them eatin it up!
For anyone feeling like arguing the fact, lets put this in a different perspective for a moment. You go to a corner store and order a sandwich. It's perfect; just the right amount of meat, bread, mayo, mustard, whatever it is makes a great sandwich for you. You happily pay for it and leave. You buy several from the various stores in your area, and they're all good; some of them are great.
Then one day, you go to that first store and they don't put one of the ingredients on the sandwich, but they charge you the same. And then a few weeks later, another one is missing, but the price stays the same. You ask what's going on and they tell you those things don't come on the sandwich anymore... but you cn pay extra if you want them. It's only a little more money. Soon everyone is doing it.
Then you go a few months later and the meat on the sandwich is all wrong. Either it's a tad rancid, or it's not even the meat you asked for. By this time, all the toppings for the sandwich have separate charges... you only get the bread and meat for the price (which is still the same as the full deal was long ago), and now the meat is wrong. Do you complain? ...or do you take that shity sandwich, shrug and say 'Well, what can you expect?' and keep coming back for more?
I'd rather play the SNES game in it's ORIGINAL FORMAT than get it on STEAM.
Even if it means searching at Game Stops or pawn shops... or online with ebay.
also the recent patches (more to come) are making it quite bearable.
I too wish a resurgence im populairity for a game that, as I tried to illustrate in this journal, is like a old friend to me that has a very special place in my heart.
This really should have been the definitive ultimate edition of Chrono Trigger and I hope that one day it will be.
Then it wil get its place in my steam library.
Like I said it doesn't really offer anything especially new that the DS version didn't but I think it has surpassed the mobile Port that is based on
I cosplay Magus currently so that'd be nice
