Unless you get something pretty recent, you are only letting yourself in for problems that you dont know about. Cam sensors rarely go, but you can get a widget to put on your ALCL connector that will give you codes in flashes, then you can usually find out what the malfunction is online, or if you have someone who can do the work... there it is. If you are going to get something else, you can usually get into something for around 200 a month that is less that 8 years old, if your credit is good. Good luck

I’m concerned because of stories like a guy who ran pedestrians into an intersection with his car because the thing kept accelerating despite him holding the brake, and then spending time in jail because they wouldn’t check the car’s computer because the manufacturer said that it’s impossible.

He only got out of it because they finally checked it after a while.

It actually is impossible, if the brakes are working properly. There was a bunch of drama a couple of decades ago about unintended acceleration in Audis, and they never proved that it was the car's fault, but Audi had a serious PR problem. If you want to get info on prices, go to NADA.org to look up the car by make and model. I would use Carfax, another website that will produce all registration and insurance claims on the vehicle that you are interested in buying. That way, you can find out if it was an insurance loss due to flood or if the mileage is accurate. a VERY worthwhile $15 spent. You can get pre-approved for a loan. Just go to your bank or credit union and ask to be pre-approved. They will want certain info, like income. Any info you want to find, pretty much, can be found in your search engine... just ask. Or, you can ask someone like me where to look for it

My husband had massive issues with his previous car, we spent thousands on it. The engine light would come on all the time and eventually we discovered that the internal systems were at fault, not the engine, but it also meant that if there was a problem with the engine we wouldn't know about it until it decided to blow up. In the end we bit the bullet and got a brand new car. We had to since that one was literally coming apart. It's expensive but worth it tbh.
