WHY?!

Lately every character adopt I’ve been interested in has always been AB’d the moment I make a bid, I’m quite salty and frustrated but I think I’m cursed or something because like I said each one I’ve bid on lately had always and I mean always been auto bought the moment I made a bid, usually anywhere from just the SB or a few dollars more.

WHY??
Why are "Adoptable" characters not only just a Thing, but seemingly a Huge Market, and Big Business in art Communities like this, particularly those friendly to Furry and Anime Art?
What are they for? What does one do with an Adopted character once they pay for it?
What was it about these characters you've missed out on that made you so eager to buy them?
Have you been looking for just One good character, or were you hoping to buy them All, and collect them?
...
I have never, ever, ever felt any compulsion to want to "Own" someone elses character I've seen in a gallery, so the whole market seems incomprehensible to me. No one has ever given me an answer to this question.
As someone who is actively in the mindset of seeking More, perhaps you can finally shed some light on the subject for me.
You really, really wanted to buy those adoptable characters.
Why?
My main reason for wanting to buy new ocs is because I like their design or think they’d be perfect as an relative or friend to one of my existing ocs, while I do not role play I do like to give my characters a background story and give them life
1 - Pay one artist for usage rights and ownership of a character reference page for a random character they drew that happens to fit a niche you desire to fill.
2 - Make up the characters Name, Personality and Backstory (... maybe).
3 - Take Ref Pic to Another Artist and Pay them to draw more pics of them.
... is that about right?

My brain is just wired completely differently. I'm more of an emotion and story first kind of person. When I desire characters, I come up with what kind of perspective and emotions I want them to inhabit first, narrow in on what gender, race and ethnicity later, remain undecided on their name until I'm forced to decide, and only very, Very last do I even consider what they physically look like, or how they dress. How someone looks on the outside is often so misleading, it's almost the least important thing about them, as a character or person, In my own head.
(Admittedly, I often can't tell you the hair or eye color of someone I've known and seen regularly for years. I don't even notice, unless it is unusual)
Doing it completely the other way around, starting with an image and building from there just feels backwards and upside down to me.
... downside to that, of course, is that by the time I've developed a character enough to want to see what they look like, they have become too precious for any image or artwork to possibly do them justice.
One of multiple reasons why my gallery is completely empty, in spite of having at least a small amount of artistic ability myself. (And no shortage of characters in my head I could share). Oh Well.

Thank you for helping me understand ... at least a little.
TBH adopts are fair game. If you like something enough you AB it. You're not cursed, someone just either had more money or was simply willing to buy it for full price.
If you want something, but can't or don't AB you have to accept that you can be outbidded at any time. It sucks, but that's how it is. :x I have been outbidded before. I have had stuff ABed before I could even glance at it. You just have to decide to make the plunge, or accept you may not win it and settle on it being in a good home!
It’s simply a matter of hoping I can win the character with a low enough bid so later once I’ve got the means to commission as much art as I can within reason again
