i made this point on twitter, but i should make it here too, i guess
if you're going to note me, please tell me what you want.
i will not respond to "No subject: Hi" notes. i'm just not going to. i don't have the emotional energy to hold up conversations with people i don't know, and nine times out of ten, those conversations end up being ones that don't have a point. they end up being "hi how are you" "good, how are you?" "good"

it's just.. a waste of my time?
if you have something you want to talk to me about, please tell me. talk to me. i do not bite. but please have something to talk about. do not put it on me to come up with something to talk about. i am not good at that. i am not good at small talk. i am not good at pointless conversations.
have a point. have a question. have something you want to talk about. start with it in the first message, or i will not answer.

I had to put a message up on my user page for similar reasons
like.. there's a chance there might be an actual point, and i don't ignore notes completely, but

I’m a person, not just an artist, and don’t mind people wanting to talk. I just need them to have something to talk about, instead of relying on me to keep the conversation they started alive
Some people do this talk because they are overtly shy. Some people do this talk because they want to show they notice you and care for you, even when they have nothing to say at the time.
But sometimes its just done for the heck of it, which is uncomfortable and awkward for both people involved. When that happens, its often better that such 'chat' is not done at all.
And the other one? That's something that can be said. You can add onto your greeting that you're messaging because you just want to let them know you know you care. It saves time. It's a did thing.
Plus, people can very easily add extra bits to show and mention they care and value you.
Indeed, your views and feeling are justified and proper.
